I'm going to change my hosting company soon but I didnt design my site and I am not very technically minded can anyone advise me on anything I need to check before moving? When a site is moved can it sometimes not work correctly with the new host- if so, what types of issues can come up? thanks

Moving a site is generally not that difficult and some hosts will even move sites for you provided that you're moving to the same environment and control panel.

The issues deal with software versions - for example one host may be running MySQL4 and another MySQL5 or PHP4 to PHP5 - and related scripting glitches. It's recommended to try to find out how closely the settings match up for what you are using and where you are planning to move.

Yeah, most hosts would be more than willing to migrate them for you. I would just make sure that the control panel is the same. That would help minimize some of the potential issues.

What control panel are you using with your current host?
And before you sign up with a host, I would suggest you to contact them and ask about the versions of PHP and mysql and check this with your current one. This is only valid if you are having some database driven applications in yoru site.

Everything else should go fine with the transfer.

If you approach any good host's sales team, they will help work out if your site will work on their services, then they should give you a free transfer (transfer for you).

It's what I and many others do.

That is all what the majority of web hosting companies do :imho: .

Do you know what control panel you are having with the current host? Just be sure you are going to to the same one as the transfer will be hassle free when it is same control panels.
