People who don't do anything with their domain names...

I can't stand people who have held domains for 8+ years, and have never done anything with them. Even worse when you email the address in the whois, they never respond back to you about selling the domain. What the hell? It's like they died, and money is still being taking out of their account each year to hold on to the name. Pisses me off a bit! lol

I register domains for my infant grand kids and it will be years before they have any use for them :)

It may be their domain and their choice to do whatever the hell they want with it, but what's the point of renting a domain, if you aren't doing anything with it? A lot of great domains have been blank for years, thay could be highly profitable if developed.

it's not may be their domain it is their domain to do with what they want...

why don't you register your own domain name or buy a name in the after market?

The person or company who owns my surname a lll.com has never parked it or developed it and has privacy protection on, and never responds, the domain would be worth around $50,000 to $100,000 on any given day.

Thats life, they have it and theres nothing i can do about it.

Let me know when it's illegal to NOT develop a domain name, and ill get back to you on this!

Until then, get over it im afraid.

I do register my own domain names as well when I find hand-regs I like, or if I ever find a domain I like in the market, that I can afford I would purchase it, but when I see a good domain that I really like, that hasn't been used for many years, it annoys me. I'm surprised no one else seems to feel the same way.

Ultimately I do get over it, I just find it so annoying.

I wish there was strict ICANN laws on updating your whois information with accurate information. Some emails I've come across are from websites that no longer exist. I never understood the point of paying for a private WhoIS when so many don't put in accurate information to begin with, shouldn't they be penalized?

Here's an interesting possibility:

I wonder if some registrars (the ones who are known to skirt ICANN's rules) hone in on some premium domains (one-worders) that are about to expire and simply renew them in that person's name (or even in a fake name) but with an email address controlled by the registrar.

I have been tracking one domain for the last year, and, literally, one day before expiration it gets renewed, but just for one year.

Meanwhile, the name does not resolve. It's a total generic, so no TM issues at all.

This person has other other premiums that don't resolve.

It wouldn't be all that difficult to do an obit search or set up a fake name/address with a working email...

Or am I just being overly suspicious?

It makes sense to me Ms Domainer. I'm almost certain it's being done, especially now as registrars start playing the game. It would be so easy for them to get dibs on good expired domains before their customers do.

I used to buy domain names on ideas for products I have. I usually end not doing anything with it so I sell it or just drop.

There could be another reason that people may not know the value of the domains. Kind of like antiques.

Legally speaking, yes, but that doesn't mean their behavior is harmless.

Suppose you live in a town where 90% of the houses are owned by a wealthy foreign investor who has never even visited the town; the investor leaves the houses empty and refuses to sell them back to local citizens, even though there are homeless people roaming the streets. Wouldn't that piss you off? Or would you say it's fine since we live in a free market?

This is the same problem the original poster is describing. Someone buys a valuable name like WIDGETS.COM, but he is too lazy/incompetent to do anything with it (like selling it), because money is apparently no object to him. He effectively takes revenue out of the widget industry and pours it down the drain every day. This is bad for the internet - because all the widget companies are forced to use lower-quality domains - and ultimately bad for the world economy.

Ha ha...I feel so much jealousy in your tone.

Too bad...the more you grip about it, the more value those domains are.

Not everything is for sale.

Secondly, there is no legal reason they must reply unless it's a TM issue.

All in all, I'm sure many people have tried what you are speaking of. Didn't you know it's very important to have a super cool email address when your rich! :lala: which in return requires no website. :gl: Their emailbox is full of $10 offers for the million dollar domain, so they just sit on their private island sucking back cold ones waiting to cash in for more beer, jet fuel and new girly dancers.

Investing!

I can't stand people who email me, call me, and send me letters for 8+ years even though I never have indicated my property was for sale. If I could hang a no soliciting sign up I would. It's my property....no soliciting, trespassing, hunting, fishing, hiking.....nothing. Get your own property or go to a public park.

Sportomoney.....I'm just trying to give you some perspective.

It's not so bad anymore because of the economy but I generally was getting about ten inquiries a day by phone or email for years and years....even though none of my properties were for sale. I even got a designer pen sent by certified mail with a plea for communication. Another time a box of chocolates. One guy years ago showed up at my house at 8:00 A.M ....that kind of scared me. I could not even imagine someone the size of Frank S. fielding all the calls/emails and other methods to make contact.

There are other reasons for NO communications. Being a domain owner many folks will contact you just so the can fish for info. about you....company size, personality, how much money you have, intimidation ability for lawsuits, etc..... Just like when you are arrested, "Anything you say can be used by a court of law", well in domains the info. they get can be used there and in other ways.

I know of a guy that got some financial domains that make big bucks and he would send a private investigator in another state to dig up any info on the domain owner....kind of car he/she drives, home value, how they dress anything of value and then would craft an offer based on their financial status. He made some serious money doing this. Right or wrong...you be the judge.

There is incentive to keep quiet....even if you are a white hat domainer. B-)

Yeah, I agree, just seems so bloody pointless. Waste of money IMO. But meh, it's your money lol.

Not to any one specific, just imho.

It's funny to hear people complain about domain owners, that doesnt do anything with the domains they own. :)

And the complainers always try to support their thought with: "....buhuuu... I am so jealous... buhuuu... its a waste, I would have used the domain for the good of all man kind... buuuhuuuu"

1. the domain owner was obviously much smarter, luckier and able to predict future trends. Why didn't you reg it ten years ago? who stopped you?

2. who says the domain owner is not doing anything with it? maybe he is using it as his e-mail adress, as Yofie mentioned.

3. maybe the domain owner is developing it, but did not bother to put a "under development" page on, because he thinks they are not good for the future launching of the site?

4. maybe he is just like millions of collectors, who collects labels, disney figures and other toys just to have it in its original box and look at it once in a while? and not even play with the toys ever! How do they dare!!! they could give it to children who could play with it instead!!!!

5. maybe they have plans to make an innovative site, but at the moment can't afford it?

And so on... The main idea is if you where so smart why did you not reg. the domain 10 years ago, instead of wining over it now? :)

I hope no one take this personal, I am not aiming at anybody specific.

Best regards,

Get a grip....people are not obliged to answer your sales enquiries and often people will only reply to actual offers reflective of the names value. Perhaps consider you might be pissing them off more than they piss you off. Also people can do what they like with their domain, if they want to put up a smiley face or do nothing with it that is 100% their right.
