Our 'industry' is still a mystery to most of the public

Well, I don't need to tell you our industry is still a mystery to most of the public

This video is pretty interesting. Very basic line of questioning, but thought provoking all the same. Would be good to dig deeper for questions with the public.

Anyway, enjoy:

"What do you think of people who own 1000 domains?"

Old guy responds "I think they're rich"

Not too surprised to see the average person don't see anything with it like a WM or company might -- what's there to be annoyed about if you're not planning on ever registering any domains?

So, true...lots of glazed eyes, whenever I mention to friends what I'm up to on the web...

But, hey...I like it, too...means we're early adopters in this gigantic internet frontier (even those of us that came 'late')...We'll be the happy vegemites, when the rest of the world catches on....:)

I'm pretty sure a few of mine think I'm a drug dealer

Seriously, who else other than a domainer and maybe a webmaster/online business owner and drug dealer are pulling in these big wires at completely random days and times? Gotta love domaining :)

I still explain it to people as internet real estate and try to relate it to being a real estate agent for the Internet -- most people get really lost if I start getting into domain names and IP address :hehe:

It's really a big fun seeing those people's eyes go wide when they hear what business we are into.

Some even say "oh, i also want to be like you, can you teach me how to start ?"

Anyhow, good video.
Pred, i stole some popcorn from you, sorry. lol

Most people that I explain it to get lost if I get into any detail about how it works, however most find it quite interesting that there's mony to be made doing essentially nothing (nothing not in cyberspace at least).

Your average person can get that someone can make money by having a website and selling products on it but doesn't seem to get that having a domain name and selling advertisements on it is essentially the same thing :]

i explain parking as a mobile billboard that is on a vacant block of land and i explain that the vacant block of land still has a address even though its undeveloped

The challenge is that domaining is inherently techy, so when you are trying to explain it to someone, if they do not have an interest in technology, they will lose any interest, once they detect the technical nature of the topic.

Some people still have a technology block in their brain, even though they use computers daily, they still resist.

Domaining needs to become non-techy for the general public to care.

'Why do people pay you money for one of these domains?', said a lady I met the other night.

'Well', I said, 'They're valuable. They earn money for you'

'How?'

'Domains have value because they are a unique address on the internet, and, a good domain describes a business, or service, really well. That's valuable 'cos it brings more people to the website, to buy more stuff from it - Or, I earn money from Ads on my site'.

'I go online all the time looking for stuff - and, I've never heard of the word 'domain'',
she said.

'How do you choose which site to visit?'

'I see a list in Google, and click on one of them that seems to describe what I'm looking for'

'There you are - that's a domain for a website you're clicking on'
, I said

'Is it? I thought it was the description in Google I was clicking on...I don't really need to know about a domain to find something, do I?'

'Well, no....'

'So, if no one has to know what a domain is to find stuff on the internet, what difference does it make what the domain is?....
'

You get the idea..... :D :D

I'm sure a lot of people here will laugh about that conversation, but she has a very good point. In today's Web (and tomorrow's, for that matter), search engines are/will be very important. Domains alone don't influence a search ranking.

In other words, we're moving away from the "type your keyboard in the address bar and add .com" era and into the "Google what you're looking for" era. Granted, there still are people that put keywords and the address bar and hope for the best, but their numbers are falling.
