I would respectfully like to add there is also a great opportunity to buy mediocre names.
A lot of the names we're seeing at auction were $10 pick ups that went through a GoDaddy/Namejet pending delete cycle, a Godaddy closeout cycle (a lot I'm seeing picked up at $5 closeout).
Not that this automatically means it's a bad name. I've seen many what I think are GOOD names. XXXXX {name removed} was one that RPK sold for example that was obviously better than $5-10 he paid at GD closeout.
Some of these names ARE good but if you're a TV investor you need to continue to remember the following:
There is little to no natural Type in Traffic - parking revenue is close to $0. This means you will have to either (a) Use the domain (b) Sell the domain or (c) Develop the domain into something. None of these are "easy". If there is traffic I'm sure the seller will state as this would be in the minority for TV.
Renewals are NOT $8
Not a big deal for those big investors who have many offsetting sales and so forth. A hold mentality works for them. Evaluate if it works for you.
30 .TVs expiring in March will cost $700 to renew. .coms would cost $240.
It's a consideration.
Some people are SELLING a whole lot more than they are BUYING.
In some cases it's making money on names not wanted to buy more SELECT AND BETTER names - HERE you can definitely find bargains. In some cases it's just trying to get money back. You don't know and I don't know what the motivation is but just because it looks like a steal and the auction holder says it's a steal doesn't mean it is - no matter how many people in these sub-forums tell you it is.
Many domainers never even venture INTO the .TV forum.
.TV is what it is
Potential. Evaluate your own risk.
I personally believe there is a HUGE upside for some names.. but there's a
dead end for many.
Make sure you have a PLAN or IDEA for the name you are going after. Do your research.
demand is rather limited and prices do not necessarily accurately represent their true value.
Demand is limited. Period. Whether you like it or not. Now there is also the edition of .CO which appears to have some legs (I'm still not sold long term). This is not the same as there is NO demand. Clearly this is not the case. But again, consider your own strategy. Consider the niches you understand and take intelligent risks.
Finally, consider prior attempts to sell
Some of these names are OLDER. Some of these names have been SHOPPED all over the internet. This is something to consider. Some people here have ALREADY contacted the more obvious end users (the .COM, the .NET the keyword TV top ad purchaser etc) BEFORE they put on auction - others may not have done. If you want to know - PM the seller. Obviously if they picked it up 2 months ago on the drop they don't know.
Last But One Note
Ignore the NAYSAYERS when they don't add anything of value. Too many people have made money to blanket slam the potential of the extension. Listen to what they say.. but evaluate yourself what you value and what you think will work. There are many who will tell you .TV is useless. Ignore them. There are many who say that .TV is different. Listen to Them. Take on board advice. Ignore anything else.
Final note
Buying at auction here for $10 and then listing it here for $100,$500 is not likely a winning strategy but good luck to you.
My point is NOT to prevent anyone from bidding but to encourage everyone to invest strategically. Don't buy niches you don't know unless the deal is particularly good (in your opinion). Don't be influenced by other bidding. Some people here REALLY know what they're doing! Others, like me, haven't a clue.
Most of all Good Luck to everyone for the long term. - if you choose and acquire wisely you'll be fine
