Hi guys,

So i'm willing to open my own website which will present my domains inventory. I have the domain I want to build the website on, but I have a few questions that i'd like to share with you:

1. Is wordpress and godaddy's hosting will be reliable and professional enough?

2. Do I need SSL certification?

Thank you for your time!

I don't know your answers but I do know godaddys not the cheapest, I found hostgator an excellent company with good deal on the Baby plan. The cheapest Ok hosting I usedso far is abelohost, based in Europe cost me 6 euros for 6 months (trying it out)

Yes, wordpress is secure enough and godaddy hosting is okay.
Unless you already have godaddy hosting, there are quite a few better hosting companies out there.

I use GD for hosting WP sites. I started with the small package that gives you like 5 sites and am now on the large program that gives you up to 20 or 25. As others have said, it is not the cheapest option. I like it because its super simple to set up new domains and turn others off. If you have minimal WP skill they GD templates will be pretty useful. For me, it is also good because most of my domains are hosted there so its easy to just switch tabs to change DNS etc. I also have a couple sites hosted on HostGator. Hostgator is much less expensive, but there service is seemingly non existent. I can literally go weeks waiting for a response to a ticket and the response always starts with "we are so sorry for the delay in responding but we are temporarily seeing a large influx of tickets....". I don't use or need an SSL on either site currently. I am slowly moving more over to e-commerce sites where that might be more needed.

WPEngine.com is the best host i've ever used for Managed wordpress sites. I use it on my current site and every other site i've ever built. I truly can't say enough good things about them! Everything is built in, their customer support is ALWAYS available on the phone, no long hold time, highly educated staff... so on. 10 out of 10 with that company!

SSL is also highly recommended and WPEngine has built in SSL integration along with CDN and other very cool features.

Don't forget mobile version of your site or use a responsive WP theme. Google looks for mobile friendliness now.

Thank you all for your comments, they're really helpful!
@Perception I am really impressed by your recommendation, so I think i'll give them a try!

Are there any more steps in your mind that are necessary for starting a website?

:) Glad to hear!

Definitely. Make sure you pick a very solid theme. Depending on what you want to add feature wise, you can start with the most notable framework (imo) Genesis. You can check them out at StudioPress.com. They have some impeccable themes, virtually flawless coding & framework. They are on the bare side, but for content heavy and performance based websites, they are phenomenal.

Otherwise, I'd head to ThemeForest.net, narrow your search for wordpress themes down to only the highest rated themes. Once you pick a theme, head to GTMetrix.com and test the themes demo page to ensure it's page speed and other metrics are up to standards before you buy it. All your SEO efforts will be pointless if you don't start with a solid foundation (framework/theme).

From there it's going to be up to you (the designer) to ensure your coding (any CSS or other additions) is clean and organized. Make sure all your content is just as clean and organized. Don't go overboard with the plugin's. Keep them to the bare minimum of what you truly need. Here are my plugin recommendations:

  • Duplicate Post (Great for, well, duplicating posts/pages - it will come in real handy)
  • EWWW Image Optimizer Cloud (Fantastic for optimizing all your images for performance)
  • Gzip Ninja Speed Compression (Allows the compression of your content to increase page load speed)
  • Query String Remover (Nobody likes query strings)
  • Simple Custom CSS (Gives you the ability to add custom CSS that will override the current CSS on the theme.)
  • Speed Booster Pack (A whole assortment of features from Minifying all your CSS to moving your scripts to the footer. Great for page speed)
  • WP-Optimize (Nothing sexier than a clean database)
  • WP Robots Txt (Get in their and allow all your Google robots to crawl/index your site)
  • WordPress SEO (When setup properly, it can help your SEO efforts)
Hmmmm, I think the main point is to keep everything clean and organized! Let me know if you have any other questions! I'm usually around.

My suggestion is :

Wordpress is more than ok for what you are going to do but as others have said be careful about the themes you choose because they can either make your life easy or a hell. So if you are not great at coding I would stay away from themeforest etc, not because what you find there is not good, but because the theme sellers don't have to give buyers support and help.

As for hosting I would not recommend GD or hostgator. Hostgator was great until it became as AEG property, then support went down the drain.
WP engine and Pagely are the best hosting providers when it's about managed wp hosting. They do pretty much everything you need but at a cost. They are very expensive for someone who doesn't have a great budget.
