With reference to this popular post about Dubai that has been running since 2007, I have a question.

IMO Dubai is not the first of its kind. Other cities have been through similar razzmatazz before it, although not at the same scale. Havana was considered the cosmopolitan place during the 1950’s. However, after Fidel Castro’s revolution Beirut replaced Havana and became the next cosmopolitan place. The wars in Lebanon in the 1970’s and 1980’s brought end to this. Then came Dubai! And we all know about Dubai.

My question is which city or region do you think will replace Dubai. I am only asking so that I can reg all domains related to that new place. LOL

Honestly if you look at Dubai's neighbor and governing emirate, Abu Dhabi, you are looking at a financial monster with far superior money management and planning than Dubai. Even thru the recession they have continued most slated projects and are buying large chunks of Wall Street businesses, and prime real estate around the world. I've always believed in Abu Dhabi's stability because it was not pumped full of hot air like Dubai was during the ecomonic boom. The thread you referenced is actually title something ... 'beyond dubai...' and the op is referencing Abu Dhabi's Reem Island. From that thread I got interested in the topic and shortly after found AbuDhabiBlog.com (see sig) available and have loaded it with content by posting relevant Abu Dhabi news articles and event reviews over the last two years. [edit] oh ya I have a Dubai domain dev'd into a small minisite even though the project has been cut drastically.

I sold off approx 5 other Dubai and Abu Dhabi hand regg'd domains in 08 for roughly $850. Then I sold 25-30 others in an auction lot for under $10 of the ones I was going to drop. Many of those were good for development but I though if I wanted to develop them they will probably be available again when I got around to it. Now I only have a couple Abu Dhabi domains left including AbuDhabiComputers.com that I would like to develop sometime.

other suggestions:

Russia (idn?)
South America, Rio (Olympics 2016)
Turkey, Istanbul

Is there really deep money to be made from domaining these? I have yet to see evidence that registering beyond the obvious premiums is worth it. For every good domain there are 1000 registrations that are crap. I don't like those odds.

Not sure but the "bear" has been hibernating for awhile. Russia has technology and a big population.

I thought the russian population was declining. If the Russian population is declining then its unlikely to become the next big player IMO.

IMO the city that will replace Dubai would be located somewhere in the mediterranean. Its only my intuition.

Hello. I don't have a crystal ball but Russia has alot of millionares and more to come with their oil and gas exploration. It was only my guess and everyone has their own opinion on it. We have a small population in Canada but our dollar sure is rising.

I'll go with the demographics. India, China, and maybe SE Asia.

Funny, I still have pictures of Dubai, circa 1980. We used little dhows to cross the Creek, and a dozen workers were lined up to crap in the water where the dhows docked on the far side. Backsides facing us.

I admit, I laughed when we were told that they planned to make Dubai a tourist destination (though the beaches were very nice even then).

Changed a bit, I guess.

I looked through that thread at the first 15 names people had mentioned (registered by numerous different people), of those 13 have dropped and one has been reregistered. These "flavour of the month" names are generally a big waste of money in my view. The level of actual enduser sales is very low.

Interesting one to bring up, I have idea whether it is a bubble of not though I would say it looks alot more rational than Dubai ever was.
