I am a bit confused about following matter :-

Some say provide fake info. when buying new domain name .

Some say don’t provide fake info. rather use “who.is” privacy.

Some say there is no harm in providing absolutely true info.

Please let me know about pros & cons or advantages & disadvantages of above mentioned three situations .

A detailed reply would be more helpful.

Thanks.

Fake info could result in you losing the domain. (if reported)
If you are looking to resell domains I would keep the info 100% up to date.
Privacy hides your true contact info, yet allows you to receive emails via a proxy address.

It really comes down to what you are comfortable with, if you don't mind others being able to look up your info then you would not need privacy.

Hi,

Definitely don`t use fake info, it`s against TOS of most registrars and ICANN policy. You may just loose your rights to domain.

It`s up to you, to use privacy or not. With whois privacy you have a bit better protection against spammers and scammers and you can`t be associated with domain - that maye be useful under some circumstances. For instance if you don`t like to be associated with adult domains etc. But sometimes you need to go through more difficult process in case you need to verify your ownership. For instance if you want to list domains for sale at Sedo - their system to verify your ownership via NS change doesn`t work always properly.

Also you may loose some potential buyers because of private whois - they don`t know how to contact you.

I wouldn't use fake info, listen to the great posts above me.

It isn't worth losing your domain.

I am a believer in real info. I don't have a spam problem (gmail catches almost all of it) and I occassionally get a legit offer that whois protection might have prevented.

When I see whois protection on a domain I am interested I am fairly certain the person doesn't want me to contact them for sale.

Imagine every business you went to had the door locked and you needed to knock to get in.

Fake whois! Terrible idea. Even if you are trying to create some form of legal protection with anonyminity that won't help you because the money trail is easy to follow.

IMHO, I don't recommend publishing your home address so I'd suggest that you either:

1. use a registrar with free privacy (e.g. 1and1-although I don't recommend this one if you plan on having hundreds of names)

2. buy privacy info feature (e.g. moniker - $1 per domain?) from your registrar

3. rent a small po box from the post office

4. or rent a box from ups store, which will give you a street address, not a po box.

create a simple spreadsheet and do some calculations as to which route is best for you when you tally up all costs.

hope this helps!
