Hey guys
I don't know why but I started to think about buying and selling domain names over the weekend. I jumped online and read all about this and I was not really surprised to find I'm about 10-20 years too late in this game. However, I have not given up hope just yet. At first I wanted to see what was out there...I found what I thought were great names like "moviesonyourpc.com" and "seriousgambling.com" which I thought would instantly make big bucks. But then I realized there were tons of these types of names available and likely they weren't worth much.

I figured to have a chance of making real money here you have to have a different strategy than everyone else. Likely you need to guess what is going to be the next big thing (ie. if we'd all known about mp3 players 5 years ago, or if we'd known cell phone ringtones would be big business).

However, I have another plan - what about registering peoples names? I think in the future everyone will want to have their ownname.com. Maybe its an even better idea to target common names or names of rich people.

What do you think?

Thanks!

Hi,

I myself am a bit late in the game but have managed to pick up a couple of beuties through luck. I think you are right it is all about the next big thing and pouncing on related domains, that's what speculation is all about. sometimes you win sometimes you loose. I have my own strategy that i am working on. I like the own names thing. Again all speculation. good luck

Which 'beauties' did you find? I'm just trying to get a feel for what is valuable. I saw plenty of 3 character .nets available - maybe they're OK.

Too late??? Never. 2005 was a great year for domaining, and 2006 will be even more profitable. Domains are like real estate. All the good houses are taken, but you can still buy them and resell them after they increase in value.

In my opinion, the key to speculation are registering niche domains and, as you suggest, forthcoming technologies... as for peoples names, in a word, no :)

Very very true!

I have been in this business only since March '05 and have found my niche in buying "good houses" and reselling them.
