OK... Here's the question. If you were a newbie to the domaining industry and had, maybe 2k to invest, how would you do it? Would you...

A. Invest the majority of your investment capital into 1 or 2 brand able dot com premium names?

B. Invest in high traffic sites?

C. Purchases several premium non dot com names?

D. Invest in a few LLLLdotcom names and hope one of them hits?

E. None of the above - please explain

What is the market like today and where do you see it going over the next 10 to 20 years?

See google trends and buy the domains which result from what is gaining traction and popularity in Google trends.

A. Invest the majority of your investment capital into 1 or 2 brand able dot com premium names? Brandables are tough because they have no real value aside from the potential 1 or 2 buyers that MAY be interested in them. I'd suggest trying to pick up some short keyword domains that have been aged. Godaddy Auctions is a great place to find values. Beware of their traffic stats though. See below.

B. Invest in high traffic sites? This can be tricky. Traffic can be faked easily enough, so never rely on that. Plus, traffic can be from the site that existed on that domain name and will eventually fade away. Back links get changed too, so that source of traffic will most likely fade. Traffic is important but I've found it's best to not rely on traffic as a deciding factor if you are going to sit on the domain for a bit.

C. Purchases several premium non dot com names? Dot coms are the best extension in my opinion, but I do own several others. The majority of my portfolio is dotCOM though. To each their own though. I would say .net and .org also have their values.

D. Invest in a few LLLLdotcom names and hope one of them hits? I have some of these. The best ones are your CVCV (like dudu.com - $1MM sale). Those seem to sell the best. Again though, just my two cents. If you can get good deals on CVCV then I don't think you'd be wasting your money, just might have to sit on them for a bit.

I wish I was as smart as you are and asked this question when I first started rather than flushing money down the toilet on garbage domains (.mobi killed me). Remember, just because a domain name is available does not mean it's good. It's probably available because others either realized it's crap already or, in rare cases, you got to a new trend before someone else did. In the second case it might be a good idea to drop the short money on a new reg. The most important thing to remember is to NEVER register trademarks. Squatters give the rest of the domain world a bad name. Best to steer clear of that stuff. If I was starting out now I would concentrate on a niche market that I knew something about. That way you are ahead of the game with your knowledge and will know what's important in that niche. If you try and buy too many fields at once you'll probably end up with some wasted money.

What is the market like today and where do you see it going over the next 10 to 20 years?

Good luck!! Just one person's opinion though. I'm sure others will vary.

I would invest in an emerging market. Personally I think IDNs are the best investment you can make in the domain industry at the moment, if you're willing to hold on to them for a few years, I expect huge ROIs for people who get in now.

Not quite sure what an IDN is - I'll look into it, thanks! I've invested in 1 emerging market so far - genetic counselling. Not sure if it'll work out, guess we'll see. Would be neat to see a thread discussing emerging markets as I've heard some discussion on the topic.%%-

IDN - Internationalized Domain Names, names including other language letters or symbols. I would recommend to read this forum, especially "IDN discussion" you will find a lot of interesting advices and warnings. Good luck.

I would read everything I could about what makes a quality domain name and then buy one or two said quality names in the aftermarket.

If you're starting out, I would advise not taking a chance, only buy proven things.

With a higher budget you could buy a LLL.com or a nice generic or category-defining .com domain.

Now that is a blanket statement, it depends on your objectives.
It may take a long time for the right buyer to show up, so while you may own a quality name you may lack liquidity.

Perhaps it may be worth investing in your ccTLD or in an industry you're familiar with.

There are many possible answers depending on your goals and investment horizon.

Buy into a field you know and like so you have pleasant development to fall back on.

Sdsinc could you please give an example of a generic and a category defining dot com?

That is what has kept me in the game. Pie in the sky dreams are great but they often don't pan out. For those domains you hold a passion on the topic, you can develop a lot easier. Although everything in this game takes some work.

It all depends on what you want to do. There is no "right" way to buy and sell domains online. If you don't have any experience, this is a great site to learn the trade. If your just starting off I really wouldn't advise buying any high priced domains, you could end up losing a lot of money and quickly want to give up on this business.

Good advice ommedu, it is best to start of small if you have no experience of buying and selling domain names and it will take work but you often only get out what you put in

Excellent advice! I'm hoping to earn a few xxxx over the next year, learn what I can, and re-invest those earnings into some more premium after market names. We'll see... wish me luck! :D:D
