New Island Formed By Global Warming

As the satellite pictures and the main photo which we publish today make clear, Warming Island has been created by a quite undeniable, rapid and enormous physical transformation and is likely to be seen around the world as a potent symbol of the coming effects of climate change.

But it is only one more example of the disintegration of the Greenland Ice Sheet, that scientists have begun to realise, only very recently, is proceeding far more rapidly than anyone thought.

The second-largest ice sheet in the world (after Antarctica), if its entire 2.5 million cubic kilometres of ice were to melt, it would lead to a global sea level rise of 7.2 metres, or more than 23 feet.

That would inundate most of the world's coastal cities, including London, swamp vast areas of heavily-populated low-lying land in countries such as Bangladesh, and remove several island countries such as the Maldives from the face of the Earth. However, even a rise one tenth as great would have devastating consequences.

Whether global warming has been caused by man, hastened by man, or is simply a natural occurence.. it's something we definitely need to be concerned about.

this is total genius. as for the actual story-- whether or not global warming exists (and we try to remain neutral on the issue), a mass of land randomly appearing is pretty bizarre and sort of scary.

It didn't come from no where. It was already basically an island, only connected to Greenland by a small ice bridge which melted.

It didn't come from nowhere, it was already there, although no one knew that because they believed it was jsut a part of the mainland.

Global warming happened many times over. The fact that humans are speeding it up should come as no surprise. It won't destroy earth. It will merely destroy humans. Good riddance. I can't wait to see humans off this planet. Stupid humans!

Nature and other forms of existence does not care how smart we think we are and what we are able to do because of it. Anything resultant of our being smart simply casues them direct harm. The fact that we then care to reduce it's harmful effects is of no value to the rest of living beings. Did we ask those migratory birds if setting up a few factories around their nesting place was ok?

Carbon footprint my ass! This is all non sense!

There comes a Coke truck in the Met food parking lot where I live, with it's engines on polluting like there is no tomorrow. If we have to drink that soda not thinking of how many pounds of pollutant spread into the air for that bottle to arrive at the supermarket and still feel good about recycling it for $0.5 cents, we must be a very smart species eh!

Stupid humans! Die human Die!

Wow biznews, you really do despise the human race don't you? I see it as kinda ironic that you are a human, that probably polutes jsut as much as the rest of us do. I'm not accusing you of anything though, as we all do it, theres virtually no way we can stop polluting completely, as even our waste pollutes the earth due to the things in it.

Yup! You are right! I do. Humans are no good. We don't think twice about squishing a roach and go to all lengths to save an endangered tiger whose demise we are responsible for. We decide, who lives and who dies. We pray to God and act like one at the same time. When the last time man spoke to God about altering his magnificent creation and apologizing for it?

Stupid humans!

Like all species before us, humans will perish. The fossils will take care of our stupid legacy.

You do have a point buznews. Besies in a sense we are getting stupider to. Like look at the Inca people who built cities where even today we can't with all this technology. Technology is nothing. Smarts is something. And we don't seem to have much smarts any more, as you previously pointed out.

Have you read the Life of Pi?

Never did. Fascinating at best. Will read it soon enough. Thanks for the info.

Thanks Commes - The point in calling us humans stupid is not to berate them, but ask, is this the best way to do things? The way we are moving forward into preserving the planet from our misguided sence of progress is tied with greed, greed and more greed in guise of saving the planet.

Saving the planet will be the biggest industry in the next few decades. Green this and carbon that will be all tied with corporate greed. No one ever talks about reducing population and curbing consumption.

No matter how green one lives, as population increases the strains caused by them also increases. The planet does not need another green building. It does not need anything made by humans anymore.

Result - global destruction is inevitable. Is it practical to do away with all modern conveniences? Sure it is! But no one wants to take this hard route. So there goes the slogans, rhetoric and lies about going green and saving the planet.

The best way to stop global warming is for scientist to develop a very good replacement for fossil fuel in cars. Imagine if all the cars ran on hydrogen. That would greatly reduce carbon dioxide.

bizwiz, first of all there are cars out there that run on things like that.second of all, even if they did find a really good one, it would be of no use as only new, expensive cars would have that just like it is now. No car collector would be willing to dispose of their vehicles like that, and the government cant just take away all cars that run on fossil fuels, it's just not possible.

More reason for us Americans to keep driving our gas-guzzling SUVs, not recycling, and not ratifying Kyoto. We (humans) are the biggest threat to our own existence.

I agree completely... So how do we get everyone else to realize what they are doing to our environment?

I'm realistic enough (pessimistic enough?) to realize that's never likely to happen... I'm afraid the human race is dooming itself to extenction at a fast clip.

Let's just hope the next administration (democrat or republican) actually gives a damn about the environment...
