CALGARY, Alberta, Dec 29 (Reuters) - A chunk of ice bigger than the area of Manhattan broke from an ice shelf in Canada's far north and could wreak havoc if it starts to float westward toward oil-drilling regions and shipping lanes next summer, a researcher said on Friday.

Global warming could be one cause of the break of the Ayles Ice Shelf at Ellesmere Island, which occurred in the summer of 2005 but was only detected recently by satellite photos, said Luke Copland, assistant professor at the University of Ottawa's geography department.

It was the largest such break in nearly three decades, casting an ice floe with an area of 66 square km (25 square miles) adrift in the Arctic Ocean, said Copland, who specializes in the study of glaciers and ice masses. Manhattan has an area of 61 square km (24 square miles). http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N29294082.htm

That is the undeniable global warming.

I live in Edmonton, a couple of hundreds of kilometres north of Calgary.

So far:
- We had a Christmas with No snow;
- It is the end of December and temperature are still reaching the positive, above zero celsius mark.
- A few weeks ago, still in Autumn, we got -39 celsius with the winchill.

And the iceberg in the north is just another proof.

If this is proof of global warming then when did global warming start?
The last time a piece of the ice shelf close to this big broke off was 30 years ago.

Global warming is undeniable but we can't keep jumping up and saying that some isolated event is "proof".

IMO, it is not so important when the global warming started or going to end. Many things are changing constantly, but attention should be given to rate of change. Global temperatures are changing at an alarm rate and thats the problem. It is the rate of change not change itself.

Whatever.

Meaning what.
Do you have something to say or have you just decided to waste everybody's time with useless and irrelevant one word quips?

Or it's just possible you're having a warmer than usual winter and an extremely cold front either due to total randomness or a natural warmth/cold cycle. For example: the record highest temperature ever measured in the U.S (134 degrees F at Death Valley, CA in July of 1913), and the hottest temperature ever recorded anywhere on the globe (136 F at Al' Aziziyah, Libya in September of 1922) occurred well before global warming was a buzzword, and despite the recent series of warm years, globally, these records have not seriously threatened.

If global warming was working that quickly, why haven't these records been broken in the past 30 years? Also, everyone blamed the busy hurricane season 2 years ago on global warming - why didn't that happen again?

I'm not denying that average temperatures have been rising, and I'm not even going to deny that we are contributing in some way, but in Earth's history there have been similar temperature cycles such as this, so it's not 100% us.

Saying you didn't get snow this Christmas means there's global warming is a pretty far stretch, to say the least.

Uh, yah, it's global warming when we get two big snow storms in colorado, and end up with like 4 feet of snow

What a completely irrelevant post.
Colorado gets snow so there is no such thing as global warming.

People, look at the phrase "GLOBAL WARMING" and stop looking out your window to determine if it's true or not. The numbers cannot be denied unless you just choose to refuse to look at them.
