Which new gTLD`s have the highest renewal cost?

Come and share once a while when you see a new gTLD with a high renewal cost.

I go first:

hotel.blog with $139,999.99 annual reg. fee

How do you think high registration fees affect the domain industry?

It doesn't affect the domain industry...
Because supply is abnormally HUGE... tons of alternatives for endusers...

This is basically LEASING the name not SELLING it.

Its the same business model some COM investors go for

The problem is no established business needs a nGTLD domain and no start-up can take the risk to front load their costs with $140K a year - it add so much risk.

CLUB have a better style - charge a premium for the domain up-front, but standard renewal fees.

If you buy a premium name and your business fails, at least you can realise some of the value of the name - but if you're just leasing the name, it's all money down the toilet. The domain has no resale value becuase the domain is a liability, not an asset.

This is the kind of name I personally would not even register for $25. Modablog.net and .eu are available.

some nGLTD pricing is all over the place

racinggame.car -> $2166 (new &/or renew) - NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!
racingcar.game -> $318 (new &/or renew)
racinggame.online -> $3.25 new $21 renew
racinggame.live -> $3.25 new $18.30 renew (esports?)

Go figure.

I think they hurt the credibility of new TLDs. It's one reason why they are not popular.
When people see that kind of pricing they can only think this is a rip-off and back off.
Personally, I am not against a one-off acquisition fee, but I refuse to buy any TLD that has expensive renewal fees like these. Worse, they can jack up prices at will and you have zero protection.

The logical conclusion is that end users will prefer to stick to stable and predictable extensions.

The maximum I have paid for a ccTLD was $80 (.cr) but the TLD is small and it is understandable that a small TLD cannot achieve economies of scale. But I have bought (and sold) one-letter ccTLDs including .cr and they are priced just like any other domain, there is no premium pricing nonsense. And you know the TLD is not going to vanish in the next few years or claw back on your domains for arbitrary reasons.

It might be more interesting to identify the highest renewal cost that is actually being paid at the moment (i.e. with an actual registrant for the domain name).

That would also identify the biggest sucker. :xf.wink:

... years or claw back on your domains for arbitrary reasons.

I think a lack of stability in pricing is a bigger problem, as it suggests they might hit you with a price hike at any moment. If the renewal is not totally ridiculous, I don't mind it being a little more than usual

I own an nGTLD that I think is really good, but its renewal is quite high, but I think it's worth the cost and the renewal is still a fraction of the NEW price. I get people asking if its up for sale quite a lot.

Clawing back domains, on the other hand, is unforgivable. That's just really sloppy management. It's happened to me and I was VERY unhappy about it. Ironically, in the end I bought it again a year later for 20% of the originally price! So I was quids in, in the end - partly due to prices generally softening and partly due to admin errors!
