2005 was a phenomenal year for the domain industry and 2006 promises to be even better. For insight into the key events and trends of the past year and a forecast for the New Year, DNJournal.com assembled a blue ribbon group of 20 domain industry experts that include key executives from the leading companies in the registration, PPC, aftermarket sales, drop catching and domain development sectors, as well as leading industry attorneys, trade show organizers and the people whose broad shoulders carry those mentioned above - domain name owners.

Their comments are featured in our annual January State of the Industry Cover Story (the most extensive piece we have ever published) which I invite you to enjoy through the link below:

"I sleep better at night knowing that Sedo has a booming marketplace as well as a leading parking service. Similarly, domain owners would be wise to build a diverse portfolio that includes plenty of brandable and resalable domains in addition to traffic domains, even though it may seem right now like traffic domain holders are having all the fun. Yes, that might even mean making some more speculative investments among the less-saturated TLDs like .info, .biz and the major ccTLDs (such as .us, .co.uk, and .de). Domainers are investors now, and portfolio diversification is an essential part of any investment strategy," Bentley said.

Good point, Matt. But old school commies can't accept the fact period, its like saying they are gay.

Schwartz concluded, "As domainers we are in the right place at the right time and you had to see it years ago to get your proper place. There is only one way to get in the game now and that requires lots of money. Luckily there is a lot of money out there and it is coming our way. The longer they delay, the more they will pay. So that is why I continually refer back to being patient. Doing nothing is making folks fortunes whether they know it or not!"
This was a GREAT READ, all I can say is WOW!

My question is if this is such an indepth look at the market. Why is it that there is no mention of IDNs? With idn enabled browsers rapidly taking over and the onslaught of a new browser called IE7 is sure to have. Not to mention the continous sales of idn domains in the x.xxx and xx.xxx price range? Why all the secrecy?

I believe this will be the largest oversight your story didn't elaborate on.

Ron,

Truly an inspirational article. I have 2900 domains but I wish I had 29,000! I especially liked Rick Schwartz's comment about being patient. I was very patient in the early 2000's selling few domains because of low demand. Now I am patient because I am reluctant to sell because I choose to develop or hold for price appreciation.
