Here's the latest. Try and do a search for some random available name on their site. Make up anything, dkfhgkjhd.com etc etc.

Now go to Moniker or another registrar and attempt to register it.

Name will say unavailable. Wonder why? Because netsol has decided they want to hold that name hostage and force you to reg it at their site for $34.99.

Talk about sneaky, shady, and underhanded.

My advice would be to steer clear of Network Solutions when searching for available names.

Wonder how many other registrars are going to follow the lead.

I wonder how fast they'd drop the name if someone were to "almost" register a trademark-infringing domain and receive a C&D...

Honestly, NetSol lost all their remaining credibility. :imho:

The rest of the domain "public" is starting to hear about this.
I'm in awe.

What, like this one ? - http://www.microsoftarescammers.com/

The next thing netsol will be doing is putting on PPC links on every name people check - would'nt that be something !

Actually : http://www.icann.org/topics/wildcard-history.html

At one point they were doing just that on .com and .net ...

You all seen how "Up in Arms" people in and out of the industry became over Mr. Ham doing this on .cm ?

Well - We were the same way just 5 years ago about the same thing on .com/.net ....

Ah , The good old days. Gone - But not forgotten ;)

Thanks, that sucks ! :td: dodgy dealings indeed ! That makes me think they are indeed registering them for the "free" period and will drop them if nobody else buys it, I'll check the ones I did in a few days.

weired :alien:

.

And will you be surprised to see DomainDoorman or another taster holding it 5 days later ? :|

OK I checked network-solutions-really-really-sucks.com at Dynadot -> available
Trying with Netsol -> available
Again with Dynadot -> taken
:)

Now playing the devil's advocate: could it be that their scripts just secure your desired name to avoid being beat to someone else by a few seconds... (preemptive registration).
If you go to network-solutions-really-really-sucks.com
you CAN take it...

Yes - but it isnt reserved for just you .....

thats what I was intially trying to check, baring in mind there's been alot of talk about people checking a name and then finding out it has been taken 10 mins later by someone else.

However, so far this does not look like it was meant for that purpose, if it was I would not be able to go to the parked page that you checked network-solutions-really-really-sucks.com

and then click on This Domain is available - Get it Now! and then buy it.

The way I see it, NetSol is not exactly acting on behalf of the customer that searched the name.

If industry leaders know about this and do nothing, then we are nothing.

Where are the advocates for domaining?. Ron at Dnj or some other person who we pay attention to needs to address this issue.

Someone should mention this to Rick Schwartz. I would like to hear what he says about this as his style of writting is so polite, lol.

NetSol scammed me many times before when I was a rookie web designer, but I didn't know that they would go that low. And all that "customer protection" talk is all excuses to get more money out of people. NetSol is legal "Cybersquatter'' themselves. Shame on you!

Sadly no, this fine domain is fully up and running.

Will have to keep an eye on it, do you think they'll drop it? Or perhaps register all possible possible alternatives thereof and actually keep them - just in case ...

I was talking to some friends and they "registered" about 50,000 domains today. And now the free registration seems to be turned off now.

I missed another opportunity to register some awesome domains.

Yes, I just checked my awesome safdafdhagfdygydifydfssdfs.com at Netsol, and it is still available.

You, domain hunters, better go grab it fast

I tested it and indeed once it's added to the cart the domain is locked down and unavailable from other registrars:

lopo02393jdhjhsjjasjdhssu3h.com

Fun :) http://NETSOLAREABUNCHOFSCAMMERS.COM

Imagine if you could run a PPC advert for "Cars" - You send the visitor to your dealership, while at your dealership choosing the car they like - you force a lockdown on all other dealerships in the world for 4 days on every single car they've looked at, giving yourself a 4 day monopoly (the average buyer doesn't know this though, so they'll think you're their only option).

Improves the odds of a sale tremendously, until the gov't comes knocking.

ICANN needs to pull their head out of NetSols ass.

Other registrars need to speak out against this sort of practice!

I see this as nothing other than a monopoly of registrar services for the unfortunate few that don't know better - it needs to be stopped.

This is truly evil. Netsol is tasting domains based on people's queries and samples the traffic for 4 days.

I just found out aboutt his now and wow. I even tried it for myself. I couldnt believe my eyes. SDFGDSFHFSGHFGHGHF.com is taken at all registrars except for netsol. And that domain was available before i did a netsol search. This is terrible!

I think we ought to call this method of domaining, "Second-Tier Domain Squatting", or maybe, "Pre-Searched Domain Acquisitions".

Or, 'Search Squatting'. Perhaps rename the company 'Search Squat'. Holding the name for 4 days only for the searcher would be ok. Holding the name for anybody at a premium is just a 'search squat' imo.

Clarification from Network Solutions

Hi my name is Shashi Bellamkonda and I work for Network Solutions. Wanted to give you our side of this subject. This measure is geared for our customers. It gives them a chance to look for domains consider if it’s what they want and then have an opportunity to register it.

Network Solutions is not front running. “ Front Runners” are people who register domain names known to have been searched, for the purpose of monetizing them and then selling them at inflated prices either directly to the customer who searched for the domain or through aftermarket channels.
We have started protecting all domain name searches at Network Solutions by holding the searched domains for our customers for a short period of time before releasing them. This gives our customers the opportunity to register names later without fear that the name will be registered by a “Front Runner.”
We are not monetizing these domains, nor do we intend to keep them after the holding period.

We did this because we heard customers complain that queried domain names are being snatched up by other people as soon as they searched. Network Solutions makes sure its search data is secure and we do not sell it any third party. I know that Network Solutions has no intention of keeping any searched domain or monetizing it.

Our response on Circelid is here :

Thanks for listening,

Shashi
