One year ago, I placed a backorder with Netregistry. They did not catch the domain. Since their backorder system requires you to pre-pay a little over $9 (non-refundable), I paid the fee, just for the sake of trying.
But, WARNING. When you backorder a name they enroll you in a subscription service and continue to charge you the same amount every year. So, they will charge you whether the domain you had backordered is dropping or not, which is what they did to me. I found they charged me another $9.39 a few days ago.
Again, when you backorder, you are not told that they will continue to charge you. I called them and explained the situation. They stated they are going to refund the fee, which I am still waiting after a couple of days. Again, $9 is not really a substantial amount, but my complaint is that you are not told at first. Even their FAQ for backorder do not contain this information on you being enrolled on a yearly subscription. The only thing clear is that you pay about $9 upfront.
In addition, I learned in a conversation with one of their reps that, although their backorder service works on a first-come first-served basis, they continue to take backorder for the same domain regardless of how many people have already placed a backorder.
What this means is that if you place a backorder first and 100 people also paid for a bacorder, the name goes to you, but they will continue to charge the other 100 people knowing that it will be your domain. In my opinion, this is unethical and unfair. But, this is only one of the many cases of backordering services that seem to operate in a very shady and unregulated manner.
