I’m relatively new to the domain selling scene and one thing that I haven’t been able to figure out is if .net is worth more than .org or if it’s the other way around. Can someone please help me with this?

Generally speaking .net’s are usually worth more than .org’s. However, I strongly believe this has to do with the industry that the domain is in.

For example, I’ve noticed businesses that are in more tech related industries tend to favor .net’s a lot more than they would a .org but in some industries .org is much more favorable like in health care, education and charity. So it really depends on the niche that you’re looking into.

Personally I prefer .org’s when building out websites to a .net as they have a more “official” and large enterprise feel to them, but that’s just my opinion.

Hope that helps.

I think that one thing that can be a deciding factor is exactly what the name is. What the intened purpose for the name would be.

As an example, CureAutism.org would be better than CureAutism.net in most cases. The ,org gives it a bit of credibility as many look at .orgs as charity usage extensions.

And for .net, CheapComputerParts.net would be better than CheapComputerParts.org since it's a business or ecommerce site.

I have had about the same amount of sales of both, so I personally haven't seen a difference that way. I have seen a lot of .org's selling more lately, so they might be better for most overall.

If you are starting a non-profit then this is a no brainer.. but generally .ORG is better than .net in my opinion.

  • When was the last time you ran into a developed or well respected .net website? Rare right?
  • Maybe one word and lll's are valuable in .net but even then.. it's like a pass around extension. They are rarely developed while .org is.
  • Alot of people defend .net right? You should ask them to show you their .net website? You'll be waiting forever.
  • Over my time domaining, 90% of .net sites i ran into have been used for some chinese landing page...
  • When people see .org and .com they take you seriously. Unless it's a premium.net,like media.net, I doubt anyone would invest time, money and energy developing a.net. Especially since .com would just eat their traffic.
  • Lastly,I've noticed that wen someone ask me to search for a .com for them and it's not available.. they never give .net a chance. It's not even an option for them. They either go for .org depending on what they are doing or go a new extension like .nyc or they change the name. But they never settle for .net.

I have sold ORGs and bought/developed NETs.

ORGs are indeed great for organizations, non-profit companies.

Also when you ask consumers ORG generally receives a higher trust score than NET.

Nonetheless with new TLDs emerging I believe extensions will matter less and less BUT the keyword has to fit the extension AND your company. If that is not the case, then the default choice will always be COM.

I also dont believe in "losing traffic". .. people either find you via a search engine or bookmarks. And if they actually remember your company (rare) then they will remember the extension too if it fits. I looked at my behaviour recently. For example I would never enter mega.com only because the file sharing service was called mega .. no I remembered that it was changed to a co.nz - now I may not be your typical consumer but mega.co.nz is already one of the most visited filesharing sites and trusted brands made in New Zealand. People just dont care whether its on COM or CO.NZ

It's easy to remember a domain extension if you make it part of your identity (if it matches your keyword and company history / branding)

Kim Dot Com understood it very well to use that to his advantage..Made by Kiwis in NZ, simple

As for investing purposes, not worth bothering with NET and ORG unless you have a clear intent to develop it and its a premium keyword. Also reselling is highly speculative, only really good keywords will sell for good prices.

Which is better? Does everything have to be black and white? That's not how the domain game works.

Ulterios sums it up very well, above.

There was a time when keyword.net & keyword.org were worth as high as 5-10% of the value of a keyword.com but you'd be lucky to get 1% of that value now. There's .com and than there's all other extensions that only work well with certain keywords (.io works well with tech related keywords, .org works well with charity/health/education/government related keywords). Stick with .com.

So High Rank For bussiness
1.com (default) vs new extension for niche keyword.
2.Net (bussiness )
3.org (non-profit)

in my opinion .
example niche jasadesignpro.com vs More Domain same tag name design jasadesign.id

Hello,

If you asked me a few years ago, I would have said .NET. Now, I'm not so sure.

If you are going to use the name for a business, spend $500 for a decent .COM here or on SEDO etc.

Personally, I also think that you could consider a very relevant new gTLD (but it has to be a perfect combination of keyword + extension).

.org is supposed to be for organisations which are usually non profit so they are not a good bet for investment.

In this case .net would be better but DON'T register one unless it is a real beauty!

I think there is huge potential in the new generic names. Lots of good ones available. Why go for the dregs of 20 year old .net?

There are actually a number of authority sites built on .net, from what I understand there is little difference in the eyes of google as I know of .net sites ranked high for competitive keywords. Where you can maximize your use of the .net is using it as a play on words to make the domain more memorable, such as nic.net which in my opion "sounds" better than than nic.com would. Another example is comcast.net, although I am certain they own comcast.com, it just sounds better and is easy to remember.

.org is actually a total sleeper though because you can build a site on them people will generally trust them more if the name is fitting.
