I suggest you before reading this thread please go through http://www.namepros.com/search-engines/302141-my-site-first-page-google-woo.html .
I was on the first page of google for the keyword” website directory” before few days I made some changes in my directory so presently it is not there but I am sure I will get that position again in very short time.
When I started doing seo for my site I was not knowing anything about seo and I do not have money to invest in promoting my site.
Here I am sharing few of my experiences which I got while doing seo for my website directory in past seven months.

1. My website directories “Title” and “Targeted keyword” both are same that is “Website directory” which may be one of the factor.
2. My “About us” ,“Contact us” and submission guide line are unique.
3. I change manually name of some of the categories and I made it in capital latter.
4. I submitted my website directories to many free website directories. ( I did not invest a single $ for submitting my website directory to any other directory)
5. When ever I was submitting my directory to any other directory all the time I use same details like title, des etc..
6. I use many social book marking site to submit my site.
7. I wrote around 6 to 7 article.
8. One of my article has title” Website directory” ( same as my keyword).

That is all I done for Doing seo of my site.

Hope this may helpful to you.

Thanks & Regards

Thanks for sharing Raju,

When doing future link building/promotion/directory submissions try to diversify your anchor links....apply keyword stemming.

i don't think google uses stemming, but yahoo does. i get ranked highest in msn search actually... now if only more people used it... lol

For how long were you ranking?

In my experience, new sites get an initial boost before fading away (assuming they avoid the sandbox). Then, if they're good enough, they gradually climb back up the SERPs.

Semantically related phrases and stemming can only be beneficial to not to come across as a overly SEO'd page/website.
Say you where put to task how to make the SERPs as objective as possible?

Would you judge a website with only keyword anchor backlinks as an objective site or as a site that has been optimized to appear as objective as possible?

Obviously the latter since backlinks with solely or predominantly having repetitive keyword anchor backlinks would be a sure sign of human manipulation.

Stemming and diversifying is very much recommended.

it would help with yahoo, but it doesn't seem to be "obvious" enough for google...
