Determining directory quality

Hello,

I'm new to this field and I'd like to apply some seo techniques to the site in my signature.
I read many threads and got convinced that directory submission is a very important part of seo.

I was told that google doesn't like those directories that act like massive unrestricted link farms and
that I should refrain from suggesting my site to all directories.

Can someone give me some advice about how to understand the quality of a directory?
Is it useful to check for its page rank? (any good tool for that?)

Thank you! :)

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

Yes directory submission really helps but only those which are genuine and honest in accepting links such as dmoz.org.
But now a days there are various paid directories available but I advise not to go there.
Dont focus too much on directory submissions

what about Yahoo!'s directory?

Thanks for the answer jason!

I searched on google for "free directory" and submitted my site only to the free ones.
They all had good page rank, so I believe that their link, if the site gets accepted, will help.

I read a post in the forum about how comments on blogs related to one's site's topic are very helpful, and now I'm following that advice.

One thing that came up to me now: do you think it is worth to subscribe to Yahoo!'s directory? It's expensive for me, so I'd like to know how much it helps.
I mean, Yahoo! is big, but it is still a single link and it's a paid link.

Have a good day!

Directory Submission helps, but we need to choose the quality directory we need to submit. How?

Check its Page Rank, Backlinks and sites submitted.

That's it! i hope it helps. ;)

Two check things to check

If you see thousands of pending links do not bother submitting.

If you hundreds of pills and pharma websites listed do not bother.

Directory submission is a helpful method of doing off page SEO. But to some extent. Don't expect to see big changes after submitting to so many directories. You can still continue directory submission along with other jobs. You need to check the PR of the directory before submitting your site over there. Also check other sites that have been submitted in the same category where you're going to place your site.

off-page seo methods

@thebutler

Thx for the tip! But how can I see the list of sites pending to be accepted by a directory?

@amelia20

Yes, I agree with you, plus being accepted by any good directory takes long time, so I cannot really see the progress yet.

The fact is that now I'm developing a feed aggregator, so I don't have much to play with for on-page SEO, because most of the content is just abstracts of articles, to which the site links.

I am posting in various forums about the same topics of the site, leaving a link to the site as signature.
It's not spamming since the other forum members can find articles that match their interests, but still it definitely feels as a not very effective, I mean google looks at it as a backlink, but...

I'm starting to think that in order to get some good links I should use non-free services.
