I logged on today to namedrive and noticed that my domain "shottown(dot)com" (nickname for chicago) has been blocked and when I go to the address itself it says "Domain blocked by advertiser". Anyone know why it would say this? I was reading a DNF post about this but most people on there were discussing offensive names and google blocking them. This obviously isnt offensive so there must be another reason.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
GoDaddyGoDaddy
shot = gun shot would be my guess

The only name I've had blocked was clearly an adult name. It wasn't even pointed at namedrive at the time, so I suspect this is the work of an overzealous adult content filter. The first name mentioned in this thread has the word "shot" in the title and could be viewed in a different context. the second one is a numeric domain that stars with "69". Again it looks to me like their adult content filter is just bieng a bit too careful.

So google blocks names? As in, if they block my name, nobody can search for it? I live in San Jose and I could of sworn that google was an american company right down the street from me, not China. Whats going on here?

They don't necessarily block people from seeing it, they choose not to run ads on it.

thanks netmeg. that explains alot. But do you think its because of the actual name? I mean, if I change a keyword would it be unblocked? shottown is the hip hop nickname for chicago but I put "chicago" in as a keyword. You think if i tryed hip hop that would change anything?

I've had wristwatch dot co dot nz & pighunter dot co dot nz blocked

Pighunter was previously a magazine for people that like to run around in forests with guns and dogs shooting swine.

Wristwatch just left me stunned.

i think is because of the domain name not the keywords, shottown sounds like a violent place.

One of my domains was blocked at NameDrive last Tuesday, and unblocked two days later. The original ND message was:

"Hello,

This is an automated mail to inform you that our advertising partner will no longer return advertising to the following domain(s):

XXXXXX.com

The reasons for this are usually:
- Adsense abuse on the domain by a previous owner
- A complaint by a trademark owner
- Advertising partner finds the name offensive (adult, drugs etc) and no longer wish to monetize the domain
We can unfortunately no longer return advertising to the domain in question.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused.

If you have any further questions, please contact us at [email protected].

Your ND team"

Two days latter the following message came from ND:

"Hello,

Due to a misunderstanding with our advertising partner, some of your domains were incorrectly marked as blocked on our system. We're happy to say that, for the domains below, we have managed to resolve the situation and the domains are now live again on the NameDrive system. We will work on moving them out of your Blocked Folder over the next 24 hours to ensure that everything is returned back to normal.

If you have any domains which were marked as blocked this week but are not listed below as resolved, we are still working to resolve the issues on these domains. If we can get the domains unblocked, then we will inform you by mail.
Should you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us at [email protected]

We apologise for this inconvenience and hope you have a great holiday period.

Best regards,

Your NameDrive team"

I think it's an issue ND is trying to handle appropriately. Google banned some ridiculous names...

Hi guys,

It's taken a week but things are back to normal again. I apologise for any inconvenience and thanks for your patience while we resolved this matter.
We'll send out another mail tomorrow morning. The vast majority of those names blocked were reinstated once we'd sorted out the misunderstanding with the new implementation - including shottown(dot)com :). All domains should be moved out of the blocked folder too by now.
If a domain remains blocked once Monday has seen the last of the repairs, I'm afraid it looks like it will stay that way. Please feel free to contact us if you feel it is a purely generic term which is neither offensive or a trademark and we'll see what we can do on a manual basis.

Hope you all have a great Sunday.

Ed

Thanks Ed.

What really annoys me isn't your actions as you seem to have acted honourably through this, but Google's bald faced hypocrisy.

I have some adult domains parked with a parking service that permits them. It's fed ads by Google, the ads fed to these domains are definitely adult adverts. Google happily accepts adult ads & feeds them to parked sites so they profit from them then has the gall to ban the sites they themselves fed the ads to.
