I started domaining in 2021 and have built up a portfolio of ~2300 domains. Around 1,000 are Atom Premium listings, 400 are BrandBucket listings, and the rest (~700) use Afternic landers.

Here are my 2024 sales in profit (after commission):

Screenshot 2025-01-24 at 8.10.22 AM.png

This is 27 sales for a total of $66,586, which is ~ 1.17% STR from my 2300 domains.

It is a very rough estimate, given that a percentage of those domains were purchased this year. I am terrible at tracking shit like this (as illustrated by the screenshot of an Apple Note above).

My total renewals, auction fees, backorder fees, closeout fees, etc., was $38,931. I would guess that at least 20% is from auctions/backorders (non-recurring fees).

So, my 2024 looks like this:

$66,586 - $38,931 = $27,655 gross profit.

In 2024, I probably spent ~2 hours/week researching lists and auctions, updating DNS, and managing branding platforms.

I can't reiterate enough how rough of an estimate this is, but I don't often see people posting post-commission numbers, so I thought I would share my experience as a relatively new person in this amazing community.

I am optimistic about 2025 and hope we all crush it.

Congratulations

Probably at least 12 years old. A lot of the filters I have set up don't even include domains registered in the last 10 years

Thanks for sharing and you're definitely on a nice path.

Any idea roughly how sales break down by platform, Atom/BB, Afternic etc?

Yeah, something like 50% Afternic, 30% Atom, 15% Dan, 5% BrandBucket

Congrats!

For 2 hrs / week this is absolutely impressive!

Same STR for 500 names.. I assume you pay tax as well so it's less than $27K..
I had a good first half of 24, but then I increased my prices and the second half was bad..

What percentage of your folio is priced over 5k?

Did you increase across the board or just certain names?

Everything pretty much.. My average sale was 3K but dropped to 2-2.5k over time..

Most are priced around 3k. Maybe like 15%

Renewals can really add up for larger portfolios. IMO, any more than 500 is risky especially if you hold many lower quality domains. It's better to focus on higher quality acquisitions, with less renewal fees which will increase your margins considerably.

Either way, it's hard to be profitable in domains, and now that you have a solid baseline you can trim and improve your portfolio moving forward. I was up to 500 domains at one point, and dropped down to maybe 100 and have built up back to 300~ with better quality. My sell through rate has improved and my average price per sale has gone up with it. Best of luck!

Well, it's not like that is a bad return for 2 hours/week.

$27,655 over 104 hours = $265 an hour.

The time used doesn't really stop you from doing other things, either work or leisure.

Plus, there is likely equity in the portfolio.

For instance, I could sell zero domains for a year and the domains I am sitting on still have high resale value, even to other investors. That could be cashed in at any time.

However, it is more beneficial to sell domains over time while many tend to go up in value.

Sell the average inventory. Keep the good stuff for a great offer.

Thank you for sharing this. This is so inspiring considering I also started in 2021. I have a small portfolio of around 100 names.
Do you mind telling how you grow the portfolio year by year (in approx numbers) and corresponding increase in sales?
In your experience does Atom have any clear advantage over Brandbucket in selling brandables?

2300 seems a bit high though for someone that started in 2021 given the fact that many worthless domains are registered over the first years and you only spend 2 hours per week in domaining..
There is a learning curve no matter how smart you are..
I prefer a slower path to minimize low value acquisitions while I'm learning and getting more experienced at the same time.. A part of your profit probably goes to name renewals that you could probably drop or liquidate. Sometimes a review of your own portfolio is tough though...

@RegFeed , I saw on your X that deLtax.io is LTO. How many of your reported sales are LTO?

true
that's what I said.. it's good for 100h work.

if its your only job and u are in usa or such then u are still screwed... but in Thailand or such u are above avg and doing good...

assuming u are smart enuf to manage finances... not waste on.stupid things.

if this guy had no clue what domain is before 2021 then his roi is well above avg for most. I guess he just real smart.

Worrying about renewals is only an issue if you’re not making sales and/or 100% rely on your domain sales to fund the entire portfolio.

It depends on the size of your portfolio. especially if you pay 40k in renewals annually..
A smaller quality portfolio is more flexible during dry times.. I cannot accept someone that started five years ago has 3000 great names, it's simply not possible..

But you don’t go from zero to 40k renewals overnight. 4 years is plenty of time to have got some results and continued to double down on what’s working. The risk is much less if it’s funded by sales and learning.

I’ve gone from approx 200 to 1700 in the same time and could have bought a LOT more if I focused on it more. (Covid years were super busy for my consulting business). It’s really only been the last year I started scaling properly.
