Movie Domains, what's the type-in traffic like?

I've noticed that many upcoming movies still have domains that follow this format still unregged:

movienamemovie.com
or
movienamethemovie.com

For example, WarOfTheWorldsMovie.com is registered by the movie studio, but many similar domains with the 'movie' addition at the end still are unregged.

Generally, the studio has taken:
moviename.com

if it was available.

So does anyone have any experience with movienamemovie.com domains? I know that any potential traffic will only be short-lived -- for the time the movie is out -- but are those domains worth the 8.95?

Do you think that they would develop natural type-in traffic when the movie gets released?

I'd say no. I for one have never gone to a movie's website directly...I always get there via google. Nobody remembers them anyway since they vary so greatly. Now what they should do is have a movie TLD. That way, you would always know that waroftheworlds.movie would belong to the WOTW movie site, as the TLD would be restricted to use by the studios. In this case, they probably would get inbound traffic like you're thinking of.

Thanks Allan. I forgot about overture while I was caught up in the number of unregistered "ThisSummersBlockBustermovie.com".

I've decided against this strategy simply because it has no long term value. After the movie dies down in theatres, any traffic that the domain would have been generating would be dead.

I only go to a movie's website once, maybe to check out a trailer or read more about it before seeing it. After that, no matter how good it is, I've never revisited the movie's site.
