I recently sold a domain privately, the sale came about through namepros.com high priced domain section. The transaction was not a pure cash transaction, since it involved the transfer of a name from the buyer also.

The buyer and I ended up using Moniker.com as an escrow service for the transaction.

Not long after the transaction was finished, I was surprised to see the domain I sold listed in the dnjournal charts. I notified the editor it was not a pure cash sale, and the chart was updated. The editor stated: "Moniker/SnapNames reported this sale."

Anyway, I just thought I would let others know, that when using moniker escrow service for higher priced domains, the details of your transaction will most likely automatically be sent to the media, in this case dnjournal.

It made no difference to me, since neither the buyer or I were worried about keeping details of the transaction private. However, this might not be the case for others in a similar situation.

I do not believe other escrow services publicize details of domain transactions that use their service.

I just checked namebio.com, and they also report only the cash amount of the transaction.

Not sure if namebio get their data from dnjournal, or directly from moniker.

Anyway, the name sold was a NNN.com, and reporting it selling for less than it did, may have an influence other sales.

Thnks for sharing. I do know which NNN.com that was, and which domain was also included in this deal and can say that other domain is also considered as high value domain and reported sale price could have bad influence to other NNN.com sellers and buyers could use it as reference for future deals with NNN.com type of domains.

Also, they should add option to mark transaction as private if you dont want that transaction be published as many buyers/sellers dont want that others know about their deal.

Good to know.

Did Moniker charge you ~1% or 10%?

If Moniker was only handling the escrow, they should have charged you the lower rate of ~1%, plus kept the details confidential.

Over the years I've gone out the way to steer clear of Moniker when doing sales, and your post further reaffirms that's a wise decision. Moniker is best avoided.

I went back and searched a domain I sold 6 months ago and it shows up on DnJournal.com with the price we sold it for through Moniker Escrow. Pretty sleazy releasing that information if you ask me.

did anyone sign a confidentiality clause?

Problem is not alone with Moniker escrow, but with sedo escrow too. All my sales done using sedo escrow are showing on dnsales report.

Wow, Sedo too.

Guess that leaves Escrow.com as about the only major escrow service, other than maybe Afternic?, where one can do domain escrow confidentially.

Furthermore, regardless of the escrow service, including escrow.com, for those doing escrow only, this thread highlights that adding a confidentiality clause for those sales too is a necessity...

One would assume that a company acting only in an escrow capacity would keep such sales data private, but apparently not so with Sedo or Moniker.

If Moniker was only handling the escrow, they should have charged you the lower rate of ~1%, plus kept the details confidential.

In our case escrow fee calculated to 1.76% of the agreed cash amount.

did anyone sign a confidentiality clause?

In our case privacy wasn't a concern, so no need for such a clause.

It just came as a surprise to me for the details of a private transaction to be automatically published publicly, and in my case the details were not even correct. Also Moniker was aware that the transaction was not a pure cash sale.

I guess these companies choose to publish escrow transaction details for the free advertising they get through dnjournal.com, etc. it may give a boost to their image as the place to sell/buy domains.

I think DNJournal should also clarify that in the "where sold" section of their charts is not 100% correct for domains that have simply used Moniker/sedo as an escrow service. For example in my case the chart said the domain was sold at "Moniker/SnapNames" when in fact the deal came about thanks to Namepros.com.

I'm sure some place in the TOS it states that the price/domain can be published unless requested otherwise.

This is a two sided coin really.. would you rather see NO reported sales?

That would hurt domainers and the domain industry.

It is always best to assume the sale will be reported. If you wish to not have it reported, be sure you do your homework and request before the transaction starts that it not be made public.

No service should charge you to do this (keep a sale private) and if they do.. use somebody else.
