Hi, I was just over at Digital, and read ANOTHER thread about getting scammed. My question is, why do people not use Moneybookers instead of Paypal? To me, at first glance, they seem to be virtually the same, except for the Ebay thing. I as a new domainer am thinking of giving up Paypal altogether...Would really like to know the pros and cons of Moneybookers, thanks, Mark

MoneyBookers = OK
PayPal = Awesome, Fantastic

That is why people stay with PayPal
Plus the Sheer numbers of Paypal users and the Recognition it has overall.
Mention Moneybookers to most people and the response is "Who" "What" "why"

Give us some facts that support this statement.

In my eyes it's the opposite -- Paypal = OK and Moneybookers = Awesome, Fantastic.

The only advantage that Paypal has over MB is the number of users (you are right, many people haven't even heard about Moneybookers).

Although I use both, the problem with Moneybookers for me is the fact you must pre-fund your balance before you can purchase anything. If you use your credit card (CC) for pre-funding, there is a low limit that you can pre-fund on a monthly basis, so if I want to buy something on NP using a credit card and moneybookers that's larger than my Moneybookers monthly limit, I'm out of luck. Also your money has to sit in the Moneybookers account until you're ready to buy something. The other way is to do a bank wire, but that's a pain and there is still the issue of your money being tied up as a Moneybookers balance. Also, there are tons of fees on Moneybookers, like pre-funding your account, making payments, etc.

I like to float my cash with a CC and PayPal allows me to do that. If an NP thread says Moneybookers is my only option to pay on a domain, in most cases I must pass it up, even if I like the domain.

John...I gave UP at PayPal, it sucks , their customer service is orrible and the chargebacks happening are just too much risk for any wise person in this business.
You trusted me by paying by wite in advance about $800, anothe rguy trusted me by paying me $3,000 last month in the same way ( I must admit, I woul dnot do that not even with my brother!) so it all depends by who you are dealing with.

MoneyBookers seems perfect to me , their Escrow is the cheapest in the industry. Of cours enothing is PERFECT but at least you don`t risk chargebacks.

I still use Moneybookers (and have paid with Moneybookers on several transactions), but the pre-funding can be a problem sometimes. I float thousands of dollars on credit cards and pay a month later, which helps manage my funds better. Since I'm a trusted buyer, the seller can trust me when I pay with PayPal, but I agree that PayPal can be a problem for a seller. On the few domains I've sold to end users, I always hold my breath when they say they can only pay with PayPal. So far I've been lucky, but for larger amounts (over $500), I insist on using an escrow service.

No to change the subject, but what about Western Union? Someone has offered to buy one of my domains with WU since he said it's the only way to pay me. How dangerous is that?

WU is okay. Well, except for their fees which are gigantic.

I was told that WU was one of the favourite ways to pay for scammers.
Also e-gold...same thing.

I guess the main reason paypal is not available in other countries. But If given the choice with both of them available I'd go with paypal because a lot of people are using them.

If you first get your money it should be fine!
But never ever !!! use it other way, if you dont know seller.

WU is not online payment service ! Buyer sends you money and you go to post-office with your passport and you get money in cash.
There are no chargebacks (imho), so you understand why scammers(sellers) use it sometimes, because when money is gone its gone.

Thanks for all the response....I guess the main point I was trying to get across is security issues, not convenience. Like rentdn said "...chances of chargeback is 0" I understand that it's not available in some countries, and the pre-funding issue is kind of a hassel, but, IMHO peace of mind is worth it. At the moment, there seems to be no real safe alternitive for small transactions (< couple of hundred) . Escrow is fine and safe, but the minimum $25 fee is not what people are willing to pay even if fees are split.

I have thought that if someone wanted to make some decent money, they should start an escrow service for small transactions with a sliding fee scale. Like $1 fee for every $10 transfered...Not a lot of money to be made for single transactions, but the money would be made in the sheer number of transactions made. I know if I had the technical expertise, I would definitely go ahead with such a service....Perhaps a trusted senior member??? :):)

OK you asked for reasons I like Paypal
For the very reason You say moneybookers is great , Chargebacks
Yes ChargeBacks from Paypal scammers are bad , but as a buyer I have been ripped by people using Moneybookers . Not being able to do a chargeback as a last resort is impossible with MB , and with buyer protection not often needed using Paypal

Most of you only see this issue from a small scale , only dealing with your own account. I operate a couple of sites where I sell ,with Paypal and WorldPay payment processing I can handle most transactions. I have moneybookers and Neteller account for those rare cases where I can't use Paypal.

Paypal is also the best for the following
1/ Buyer Acceptance (most people have heard of Paypal)

2/ Ease of Use (Ever tried adding Moneybookers / Neteller to a retail Site)

3/ Ease of Use with Client that has no existing account. Try sending money/ Payment request Via moneybookers if client does not have a MB Account.

4/ Selection of Currencies. Paypal allows me to keep balances in multiple currencies easily. Neteller / MB does not. With the Australian Dollar / USDollar exchange changing daily , I keep USD and AUD balances so not to lose on future rate changes. They also have fair Exchange rates when I need to Transfer between currencies.

5/ Little Verisign Security OTP KEY
That my friends is the way of the future of ONLINE transactions
Paypal needs pat on the back for introducing it and so cheaply.
$5USD / $7.50AUD (Including Postage from US)

6/ Support , Everyone bitches about PP support . Try using Neteller sometime soon. It took me 4 weeks , Multiple phone calls, Emails and scanned documents before Neteller Un-Froze my account last year. What was the reason it was frozen , (Fraud, Unauthorised access, False Details) .
No , I had too much in my account.
Jeez like that is a MAJOR disaster for them.

If i had to choose between Paypal and Moneybookers i would say MoneyBookers but it's a real problem to convince someone about the integrity of an unknown service that he has to trust because it's your favorite
That leaves us with the known Paypal and its problems
(let's not discuss that many people still don't trust CC at ALL)

my vote with paypal

if you don't want to be protected frm charge back then simply ask the buyer to open a dispute and close the dispute on paypal and then the deal can be completed frm your end.

With this you won't face a charge back issue
