Does anyone actually read this? I've been getting it in the mail... It's a free magazine about domaining (more accurately, I've been getting it for free), so I guess I can't complain. However, I have to say that I'm really disappointed in the direction this magazine is heading.

July's issue was especially thick, so I got sort of excited... Until I opened it.

There's basically an article talking about how GoDaddy is the best thing since sliced bread... Some "think piece" about why everyone should love .ME, which was reminiscent of their previous article about why everyone should love .BIZ. Both are a complete joke to anyone who knows anything about domaining. .ME is nothing more than a shorter version of .name.

There was also a piece on mTLD's acquisition of some software company that can convert regular web sites into .mobi compatible format. Though they did state that mTLD has no clue how they will implement this into something promising, the writer went on a holy crusade to explain how this news is a great thing for .mobi and a boohoo to all the naysayers. Great. It doesn't really consider the fact that even now, some people can view regular websites on their mobile, and that in the near future, it'll probably be standard. So to me it just seems like mTLD is investing more money in dead technology that they have no clue on how to implement or promote to begin with.

Then the rest of the magazine was filled with advertisements and about 90 pages that were nothing more than blog entries ripped directly from popular domaining blogs...

Seriously guys, what the hell are you doing?

I just wanted to know if anyone else reads this and has a different take on it all?

Yeah, way too many advertisements (same can be said about Domainer's Magazine).

And I really wish they weren't written at a newbie level -- they need to start hiring actual domainers to work for them instead of trying to educate people who know more than they do about what's actually going on

I haven't been too impressed either.

Is there a domainer magazine much better?

My free magazine has too many advertisements... DUH?

I like the magazine actually... Sometimes it's nice to read about domaining while I am away from the computer.... I usually read during my lunch break... Even though it is mostly rehash content to those who keep up on such things.

Agreed!

That article was titled with "New Domaining Opportunities and Reasons to Like .ME" and it's one heck of a amazingly misleading crafted title.

It really destroys the credibility of a magazine that is created for domainers.

The .ME article looks more like an advertorial then a well thought out article to inform and help domainers...that article will only help newbies waste their money on a domain extension with zero future and potential and leave the seasoned domainers scratching their heads how such a article could ever be considered to be published...let alone actually be published.

Kind of disappointing really...

Advertorial, thats the perfect word. And it seems to be so true about most of their articles. I'm not trying to be negative, because I really do love the idea of a print magazine for domainers, but to me it just seems like they are going about it completely wrong. I mean, I realize you need advertisers to pay the bills, I don't mind advertisements... But there needs to be something substantive in between, and as you pointed out, the articles feel more like advertorials. I love that word, thanks. :)

I admit I'm not very much of a domain expert, but Modern Domainer hasn't been much use to me. I don't feel like I'm ever really learning much from it. I'd probably pay for a good enough magazine, but not this one.

I get two subscriptions from the web hosting industry, Ping! Zine and The WHIR, both of which make you feel like you've learned something new when you open them. Both of these are free as well. I know that every article can't always be the best for me because folks have differing viewpoints and perceptions. However, I agree with much of the above as this feels like a magazine full of adverts as opposed to a magazine full of information.

Sounds like they (Modern Domainer) are using "technology" journalists to write their articles rather than people who genuinely know about the domainer business. Took a look at the website and it is dire.

They are taking the view to be loved by all of the .MOBI owners

I used to publish a magazine. If you want to survive you have to find advertisers and be friendly with them with editorial content. Rick Latona advertises for example. I think it's a well put together magazine. Issue #2 imho wasn't as good as the first. It's a huge blog reprint for the most part. I would like to see some more original content from those same bloggers (latona, schwartz, schilling, or even RJ). Some interviews would also help the mag imho.

They do need to pick some battles though and find ways to be critical.

I feel that both magazines are moving in their own directions. I won't say whether those directions are right or wrong, they just don't appeal to me at this point in time.

If some of you feel that you can do better when it comes to content/concept for another magazine, hit me up. I own DomainMagazine.com and would love to collaborate with other domainers (like-minded or not). Currently, I have no desire to publish a print edition, but I'm open-minded. As far as building an online magazine, there's plenty of fresh concepts to explore. We can power the whole enterprise with our own custom software platform, but we're always looking for team players and partners. We get lots of offers for the domain, but this is one that I'd like to develop in time.

either way, good luck to all...

Hows my luck. I got the July Issue, totally pumped because it was the first issue I had ever received. Come to find out that somehow all the pages were gone, the only thing I was left with was the front and back cover :(
