All of you Mobi-eers check out Yahoo's new mobile site.

It's pretty cool, it brings the entire internet to your phone.

not one word about Mobi

Why dotmobi is useful

mejcdj said:
So, in your scenario.. if some one goes to jimsjams.mobi on the pda, he should then be given the option to go to the full version of jimsjams.com?

What I mean is to put the device detect and redirect on the dotmobi. If you are accessing by desktop you can set up a full version, medium screen a medium version, and small PDA a small version. If the .coms were to do that, as it stands, then none of us would have the opportunity to see a full blown .com site on our PDA becuase there would be a forced redirect (even if some may choose to afford it like unlimited download plans).
If that is your suggestion, what if I own jimsjams.mobi and you own jimsjams.com? That would not be fair to me since I did the advertising and marketing for my mobi.. and then the surfer is given the opportunity to see you full blown .com.

Then a dotmobi might be a good buy to have a device detect on it. On fairness, the same could be said about other extensions .net .org etc in terms of marketing. People need to be smarter about noting the extension, and ICANN is trying to build awareness by having many extensions denote a function like .jobs etc.

This is why some wonder if .mobi can even overtake .com globally. Because we need to have access to the full featured .com site as it stands today on the go. So the device detect can popularly be done on the .mobi.

.COM for desktop COMputer -)

That can not be done for quite some time, unless all of the owners of .com sites greatly reduce the amount of rich content on their sites. This is up to the individual owner, not the device makers. If everyone went to a .mobi compliant format, then this would be fine.. but I can bet you plenty, that they all won't . That is why we need .mobi. So that the information can be found without paying $50 for bandwidth to visit one .com site that is not mobi ready.

You raise some good points. As far as time frame I dunno, but if we can read the trends we may be able to benefit from them. I am just advocating for user perspective power, having choice, but of course we will all witness what will manifest =)

When you can tell me exactly what nokia, samsung, ericsson, and all the other backers actually have staked into mobi then maybe I will believe the hype. These companies have been nearly silent about mobi and even mTLD doesn't give us ANY info on the relationship with the backers. mTLD has done a great job of convincing domainers of "potential" and those who missed the bet on com, net, and orgs are now scrambling to get a piece of a new pie. However .mobi is at best a McDonalds apple pie for 99 cents. It might taste good now but as soon as you have to sh1t it out the pain will be unbearable.

I'll take exception to this last point (with regard to the most lovely McD's Apple Pies™ ... mmmm ... ), but the rest of this post has LOTS of merit (if one dares care to think about it, in its entirety, objectively), IMHO. :gl:

Just my two sense.

I think we have a miscommunication here..

It is NOT about making the devices smarter, we can hope that one day all the phones and PDAs from all the many different companies will all come together and say.. lets do this and lets make it work on .com.. TOGETHER.

They won't labrocca.. they all have their own marketing plans and their own agendas. We have no control over that in any way shape or form. If we wait for that, we will never get the mobile web going. We are tired of waiting, so we have .mobi.

Its not that its impossible to have .com on the mobile device, its that there is not enough cooperation between the makers of these products to make it possible for all the .coms to work on PDAs and mobile devices. They charge too much for bandwidth, they wont conform to a common standard and they refuse to work as a team when it comes to any of this.

Then we have the .com sites. They are not all going to conform to make their sites mobile ready. They won't reduce their super rich content sites and download sites, file sharing, image hosting, video streaming sites down to what is appropriate or usable for the mobile devices. Who blames them?? They have content that is good for the fixed web, not for the mobile web. There are some sites we will not be visiting while on the mobile, those sites we save for at home with coffee and a smoke.

So, untill they (device makers) get their acts together, we will use .mobi. It will work and consumers will have access to information that they can read and use whenever they like. They won't have to worry about huge bills for bandwidth from surfing, they won't be frustrated by 'the site can not be viewed' errors, they wont have to scroll left right up and down to read content.

We are not the bad guys labrocca. We are simply working with what we have been given to make the mobile web work.

Mejcdj

PS-- not ALL of us missed out on the .com rush. I have had names as far back as 1998, close to the end of the rush, but I made my investment back with names to spare. :)
Some of us just see something different and new with what .mobi has to offer.

As a principle, just because a technology is available doesn't mean it is best to be used or will be used.

The atomic bomb is a "smart" device.

Do the device detect on the dotmobi so I can always continue to read this NP message board on my PDA with scrollbars guaranteed forever. In fact a newdomainforum.mobi might be better than newdomainforum.com to advertise in the future, if there are 4 to 1 mobile devices to computers only currently, just have a device detect (from computer version to PDA version) on the dotmobi.

This keeps dotcoms that exist already today accesible to mobile devices in full featured versions (because there is no forced mobile redirect).

As a general principle, we need to advocate for user, grassroots, power point of view not automatically the tech capability point of view.. (advocating for no more atomic bombs)

I've said it before, I think Samsung is up to something. Considering the amount of .mobi domains that they're recently purchased and the fact that they are coming out with a phone called "Mobi" makes me think that something is about to happen. Its purely speculation, of course, so don't flame me labrocca.

Man, .mobi really offends the hell out of some people. It makes me chuckle :)

We can do that better with mobi than the .coms could. We are new, no big sites with tons of content to break down. We still have rules and standards we MUST abide by. The .coms can do as they please and if they decide not to make a smaller pda/mobile version of their site, we are back to a bad user experience and more confusion.
The problem is getting the millions and millions of webmasters and site owners of the 100 or so other extensions to follow suit. Its 1000x easier to just make the .mobis do it, Then everyone in the world will know, beyond any doubt, that they WILL see a mobile site when they surf on their devices.

You stated that the surfer would have the option to see the full version of the .com from jimsjams.com if they went to jimsjams.mobi. There is nothing like that on the web now. If I put in joeblo.net, I go to joeblo.net, not a page asking me if I want to see joeblo.com. Thats the difference.

There is no doubt in my mind that .mobi wil NOT replace .com. Not in our wildest dreams. Mobi is for mobiles, smaller units, on the go stuff. .com is for pcs and laptops. the 'daddies' of the web. If given the choice to surf on my 20 inch flat screen with a great big kb and a big old desk with my feet up, or a small little screen that I might get finger cramps on if I use to too much.. Im going or the desktop or PC.

Its not about 'replacing' .com, .net. dot anything. Its about a common standard that makes it possible to see and recieve info from the mobile web.. from any subject you search. Its a little version of the big web IMO. Compact and ready to use anywhere. NOT a replacement.

.COM for desktop COMputer -)

hey labrocca whatever you say you are obviously more intelligent than anybody here and anybody ant mTLD, let me ask you one question oh intelligent one.

If mobi takes off and does what we think and they claim that it can and should do, who will be the moron, me or you? If i lose $10k because I took a shot to make several hundred thousand if not more, I think it is worth it.

The bottom line is that whether samsung, nokia, etc. have money involved or not they are allowing mTLD to use their names and logos to state that they are behind the mTLD that is as good as cash invested in my opinion these companies have massive brand awareness and they take where they choose to put their brands very seriously.

Let me ask you this if samsung is registering a number of .mobis and they have a phone called the mobi what does that tell you? I will give you my interpretation of what and why samsung is doing what they are doing.

Samsung being a handset manufacturer doesnt get to partake in the multiple revenue streams from a customer as do the network operators, verizon, sprint, cingular, etc.

By adopting .mobi and building a network of mobile related sites they in effect have the opportunity to exploit that enduser revenue stream whether it be advertising, additional product sales, search, music downloads, etc.

Seems like a smart move for Samsung to me, It is also smart for the network operators because the better the user experience is online whether or not they are in the sprint bubble network or surfing the mobile web, the more minutes the customer will use and thereby enhancing their revenue stream as well. So if the biz model makes sense for the handset manufacturer and the operator than can you explain why it doesnt make sense to you, or can you not grasp the business opportunities that these companies have in front of them by sponsoring a mobi network?

I'm sorry if there is some confusion, this is a very deep subject. What I meant to convey is the surfer should have the right to see the full version of jimjams.com if the surfer were to go to jimjams.com on the mobile device. (not a forced mobile redirect version on the .com)

Only assuming a company has one domain.

After years of advances, the best browsers ever made for the desktop/laptop computer still can't display many non-.mobi sites well -- due to incompatibility with the browsers, or poorly thought-out sites, or site designers trying to get too far ahead on the cutting edge of Web development technology, or whatever. Chances are great that there will never be a truly satisfying solution to all of that. What makes you think there will ever be a technology for small devices that could make them all look good on a tiny screen? The smartest technology around isn't going to be able to take everything into account. And that's where something like .mobi can give predictable results.

OK Got ya ;)

Again, tho, its not really do-able untill all of the full version sites relax on the content ...and they have to also comply with the standards set forth for .mobi so that they CAN be seen on all the browsers.

Untill we have ONE mobile browser , this will have to be.

Even if mobile devices become as "smart" as today's computers, by the time it reaches that point, computers would be far more advanced. This consequently enhances the PC internet experience, thus making the mobile devices "dumb" again in relative terms.

I am interested in seeing more sites that are 100% mobile. I know that there are a few, but I want to see more mobile sites that are completely independent of any related desktop version...

Who ever said Dot-Mobi would be static to technological advancement?
Isn't it's goal to deliver optimized content specific to the available technology?
It's not unreasonable in expecting .mobi to be dynamic with technological advancement?

The goal of optimized content delivery seem's to be a fine niche if technologically dynamic.

Right now, what exists, is primarily .com.
Now, we need to advocate as users for the preserving of the full .com site when I access it by mobile device/PDA.

So if I'm a new company, who only wants to advertise one domain, what would I choose? If the device detect is popularly done on .mobi (to preserve full blown .com version access by mobile devices/PDA's) then even a desktop computer or laptop can see a full version 20 inch screen format on the .mobi! Just have the .mobi detect a desktop computer and show a full computer version of a site! This means that the new company owner covers all accessing devices from computer to PDA with one domain .mobi

Now why not have .com do it? Yes it can, but if that became the world's standard then that would jip the mobile user experience because the current existing dotcoms will not be viewable in full format version by PDAs with a forced mobile redirect.

The key is to see what exists now, and how the evolving will take place.

This just suggests that .mobi can be the choice of today and tomorrow for a new business.

.Com won't be replaced, but .Mobi may be more popular and a wiser new business choice to cover all devices.. to cover mobile devices' market and the desktop (with the appropriate device detect and redirect) on one domain. Both is best, of course.. if possible.. if not, .mobi then the choice of new businesses tomorrow?

Just trying to read the trends.. =)

OK.. I see what you are saying.

- .mobi is in a better position to offer full screen and smaller screen formats to the population. We could offer a redirect to detect a desktop or laptop computer so that the site is enlarged for more content. Got ya

- .com is in a potentially bad situation if we do this because more will turn to .mobi than they will .com since it covers mobile devices AND PCS/laptops while this is not possible for .com.

I COMPLETELY misunderstood what you were saying.

This is one heck of a scenario... makes me wonder a lot about what 'could be'. WOW

Mejcdj

Yes! :)

The reason why .com is a potentially bad situation now for a mobile redirect is that we need to preserve the full blown .com site accessible on my PDA anywhere. If there was a forced "mobile redirect" standard on the .coms then it would severely limit mobile user experience. Yes, do it on .mobi!

It is important to see how it will evolve based on what exists today. .COMs. Maybe many years from now people will know what to expect from a .com site. But as for today and tomorrow, we need to advocate for the best user experience - to have a .com full featured site preseved accessible by mobile device.

Yes I enjoy the desktop experience more, need the mobile though..

We should also not underestimate the power of a nickname on the users who drive the market which largely dictates what technology becomes successful..

Plain and simple, the power of the nickname on the masses' mentality:

Generally,

.COM - for COMputer desktop
.MOBI - for all mobile devices
