I have read in a few posts about the concern of the screen size of the handheld device which of course is presently limited in its physical size. However in the not so distant future you will see devices with screens made from bio tech or such digital wonders that will fold and unfold like paper so we can view larger screens from any handheld device so this will eliminate the screen size issue.

Hence mobi sites will eventaully be viewed with the ease of a laptop. Picture a cell phone/or blackberry type pda with a foldable liteweight auxilliary screen all run with a new breed of battery power/mini fuel cell tech , its on its way folks. Mobi will rule the road and I can hardly wait!!

The screen size developments you predict are indeed likely to occur, but IMHO this is not something .mobi can rely on to ensure its success.

Limited screen size was only ever an obstacle for .mobi adoption in an indirect sort of way - at the time when people doubted that the whole mobile internet concept was a big trend - remember hearing "Why would I ever want to access the internet on my cellphone?."

Now educated mobi skepticism has swung to the other extreme - as in "Of course the mobile internet will be huge, but devices will be so powerful so soon that there is no need for .mobi standards at all, even today."

Whenever enough people are able to roll out a book-sized paper-like screen out of their pocket and relax with a good ebook in the park, then .mobi should drop the mandatory standards and become just another extension.

How successful it will be then relative to those that never had any standards at all, will depend on how well these standards were utilized when they were needed. IMHO we'll have enough time to make very good use of them, but I'm no clairvoyant so I couldn't possibly know for sure.

undoubtedly there will be newer and better screens

and maybe someday someone will offer a screen that can expand from a small phone

but this is a long way off

people still prefer to carry small phones, that will never change ....

so in a way, the best advantage mobi can have is to have phone screens remain small as in the typical motorola razr flip phone ..... because on those phones mobi will be a necessity imo

Name Idol elucidates the point flawlessly...

It's all about "catching on". If people get used to typing in .mobi before cell phone technology has advanced to the point where extension is irrelevant, then dotmobi will be a success. If dotmobi fails to do that, it'll likely end up being merely another extension alongside .net and .info.

Think about it really... How many people other than domainers know that .com means commercial or .net means network? How many people actually register the name they want in a particular extension based on these attributed standards?

The bottom line is that the .com behemoth has broken all barriers -- companies, charitable foundations, and regular people alike all splurge on .com's every single day.

If dotmobi can separate itself from the competition and clearly make a mark as the 'mobile web' extension, then future technologies enhancing screen size and resolution will be irrlevant, as will future technologies like WiBro, 5G (or whatever the hell will be around then!), etc.
