Never heard this one before. Was looking through Revenue magazine from November/December 2007, and in their .mobi article they say the following... (Page 38)

The landing page must be "name.mobi" and nothing else - no W's or other third-level name. The .mobi thinking is that consumers don't want to type any more than they have to on a zero-through-nine keypad. Again, .mobi sites using W's will be "turned off" in a year's time.
So - is the author of this article completely wrong? I highly doubt you will be stripped of your .mobi domain for using "www." on it. Is there something I'm missing? It's a domain, can't you do anything you want with it in DNS?

The article also says in another section about frames...

In fact, .mobi sites implementing frames a year from now will be "turned off".
I'm sort of shocked such bold comments would be made by Revenue magazine and not be true. It seems like an odd thing to make up.

So - is this correct, or was the author completely misinformed?

I'm not 100% certain about the specifics of your question (you can certainly check at the mTLD Web site), but I believe for the first one that your site has to resolve both with or without the "www."

In any case, any "infraction" against the mTLD guidelines will not result in immediate "turning off" of your domain. You'll be sent an initial warning as to what is not meeting the requirements. They'll give you time to fix that, and then check again. If I remember correctly, you'll be given 3 chances to fix what's not right before any action would be taken.

So you're not just going to be surprised one day to find your site not working.

It makes sense that the "www" would be eliminated. Have not heard the official word from mtld on this. None of the showcase sites utilize the "www".

dag, thanks for the response. Well the question really was "will your domain be 'turned off' if you use www like Revenue magazine said?" If so, what does 'turned off' mean and who would be turning the domain off?

Yes, it makes sense to not have "www" on .mobi domains, but I'm not sure what the author of this article was meaning when saying that your domains would be "turned off" if you used the www. Who would be turning the domain off? I was mostly curious if the author is wrong, or there is something I don't know about .mobi about not using frames and www or other third-level domains.

It would also make sense to default to .mobi in a year or two (once the content is there) so you just key in "name" & that's all....

Just adding an extension when you want a non dotmobi site....

another good reason to be .mobi ;)

The .mobi developer guides make certain recommendations and spell out a number of requirements, failure to abide by which may result in a loss of a .mobi domain.

Regarding the "turning off", you get a non-compliance notice, then you get some time to fix the problems, and then the registration gets revoked if you haven't fixed the problems.

Right, which is what I was saying above, and I believe you actually get 3 such notices before anything is "turned off."

The only ones who could/would do the turning off would be the mTLD registry.

The author is in fact wrong in stating it so simplistically.

Thats interesting. I did not know that about .mobi. However, I would guess mTLD registry won't ever resort to being so nitpicky that "oh, you are using www, we're going to send you a warning." Maybe I'm wrong. Don't know too much about .mobi myself.

I do see the benefit at some point to have no extension by default. It's like the IPhone's ".com" button I guess, just lack of it.

MTLD is not going to revoke registrations of domains that are not in compliance with the standards. There is a series of warnings and then the domain goes inert - does not resolve to anything. It is still your name, but you have to show that you have fixed the problem in order to be on-line again. You probably could sell an inert domain as well, but not sure of that.

This compliance thing may become labor intensive quickly - the warnings can be automatic, but everybody and their cat will have "special situations" and humans will be needed to make decisions. Sounds expensive, and it would not surprise me to see some changes in the system - which has not started yet, AFAIK - have not heard about anyone getting notices.
