I'm starting the official Mixed Reality thread. With Microsoft and others pushing for this phrase some of us are hoping to benefit. This is where we discuss and show case our domains.

My domains:

MixedRealityTours
MixedRealityTravel
MixedRealityFitness
MixedRealitySchool
MixedRealityMath
MixedRealityPhysics
MixedRealityConstruction
MixedRealityAds
MixedRealityTennis
MixedRealityGolf
MixedRealityGym
MixedRealityDate
MixedRealityLove

Not posted these in this thread yet but added these two recently:

Live Mixed Reality (.com)

Tours MR (.com)

Has anybody in this thread actually sold any mr/mixe reality names yet?

Seems to me people are going wild and regging all sorts of far fetched names while few go after quality names.

Same old story I guess.

I guess we are now at a time before the big goldrush like where VR was at mid 2014. Facebook did a announcement for the takover of Oculus and from there on a steady rise / interest.

When the first Mixed Reality device will hit the stores mid august (Lenovo) every quality MR domain handreg will be long gone just like with VR mid 2014 to mid 2015 a massive reg fest. Most quality MR domains are already gone to China and others like myself. I started regging premium one word MR domains 02 december 2015 oa PokerMR etc.

But from all the 195 VR/MR .com domains (1/3 of total portfolio) i put on sale a couple of days ago i think i can get 1 big sale the next 6 months. Maybe even a early MR sale...

I think at this stage owners of "mixed reality" domains are more likely to get offers than owners of "MR" domains.

But me and Elad turned down an offer for Mobile MR (.com)

I know a member of this thread sold a geo + MR name in the $xxx range.

I'm not so sure the need for domains will be as big for MR as for VR.

I can see how WebVR sites are useful for VR as you can jump from one immersive world to the next for shopping, videos, games, education, adult. But for MR glasses I imagine more like subtle notifications poping up in your field of vision when you are out and about on the town. I don't quite see how websites will be useful for that.

But what do I know.

Mixed Reality will be just as capable for home use as VR.

Most of the use cases for it are inside businesses or at home. Obviously one day the aim is for people to be walking about with some form of smart glasses but mobile internet solutions will be pretty fast by then ;)

Yeah, it will be equally capable but will it need specific websites? If so, why? What can a website do for MR that an app can not do? In what type of situations will I need to visit a website to access an MR experience?

If MR is a spectrum, then any kind of situation.
If not, it will be needed for finding content , branding etc..

Ask the exact same question for VR and you will have your answer lol

Just as there is a web for VR content there will be a web for mixed reality content.

The first platform it's being launched on is Windows so it's pretty much a given that a search engine will eventually become cross platform compatible.

Ask yourself this qustion, what was stopping VR from just being App based? The answer is pretty much "Nothing".

You had people saying VR will just be app based and my reply was consimers like flexibility and so do companies who want to have a unique web presence.

Nothing was stopping VR from being strictly app based. It's just that WebVR has a ton of advantages for VR.

But just because the web has advantages for VR doesn't mean it will have the same advantages for MR. They are two different techonologies.

To me the difference is in the level of immersion. I can easily see why websites are a great way to distribute totally immersive content that blocks out the real world, for VR.

But for MR, where you need to operate om the real world, I don't see the need for websites. Apps just seem much more practical to me.

VR is for shutting out the real world while MR is for enhancing the real world, so to speak.

But hey, I'm just speculating. I hope MR domains take off too.

But remember just because there is a difference in tech's does not make any difference to the way people would access the content.

The internet is pretty much just a series of code that makes something happen when you chose a specific option. That means there is absolutely no difference between VR or MR in regards to how the content is possible to access.

If I want to see a hologram girl what makes any difference whether I click on a url link or a app? I know for fact the adult industry will always favour a web presence for their content.

VR is a subset of MR for some ... but who knows , still early ;)

Ok, let me re-phrase.

I think people will use MR in a different way from how they use VR.

I think apps are great for my smart phone for example. Because I use my phone for routine tasks and I want to access the functions quickly. If I had to manually type in a web adress to acces my favourite newspaper, games or social apps it would not at all be as flexible.

This is the same way I see MR being used. While walking around town you might want notifications about sales from your favourite brands. Or maybe you want to see historical tours of the city. Play some sort of Pokemon go-ish game or whatever. That is what apps are perfect for. Download it once and let it do its thing. Websites are not really practical for that.

VR on the other hand is different. I can see how people hang out with their friends in VR, they share links that transport them to new immmersive worlds, watch 360 videos together and so on. Those type of experiences can use websites for sure. Because you are immersed in a virtual world already. You are not walking around town.

MR will use voice for navigation...

It will be much faster to "call'' a domain name and not type-in the domain in Google. Because of this i think MR and VR in combination with voice commands will boost traffic / value numbers of .com domains. The app is a overhyped term and is nothing more then a smartphone optimised software you first have to install. Acces and conversions of visitors will be much higher when one don't have to install the app before testing / playing / using.

Webbrowsers and their possibilities are constantly evolving. A web page could for example represent some interactive 3D objects. When visiting a site containing MR content, the real world environment can become the canvas for placing interactive 3D objects. Sky is the limit.

This app or website discussion is an interesting point. I also thought about it, but in a more general way.

It might well be that domain names (in fact URLs) become obsolete in the future, not just for MR, but in general.

Maybe everything will be in apps and instead of typing an URL you would use apps and/or have an app to find other apps and in fact an app is just a website, but without an URL or domain like newspage.com - it might just be newspage app.

So maybe technically all domain names/site addresses become obsolete one day? On the other hand, maybe in future you will speak out / call an address for example while using a MR-device or the device is connected to your brain and just by thinking of it, the name, it will launch the app/website.

Just a few quick thoughts that came to my mind, I'm not sure if this is what I believe is going to happen. But generally with technology evolving and actually existing research (and devices!) to control devices with brain signals, it can be quite likely that domains/URLs become obsolete. Or can it? Not sure myself to be honest.

Maybe putting it into an example could help to understand/imagine this better (also for myself):

I want to find a plumber service in Bern.

Today: I duckduckgo or google "plumber service Bern".

Future: I use a MR or whatever device that is intelligent enough to present me a list of plumber services in Bern when I say "plumber services Bern" or just think about it, because the system is connected to my brain and interprets brain signals.

The future could be faster (though it can have negative sides: background voice disturbing my voice command / do we really want a device to read our brains? / could it lead to an internet with less variation / all kind of 1984 scenarios come in my mind) and more efficient. It seems that this could replace how we search for a plumber in Bern today.

I don't want this to lead too much off-topic, but in a way it is related, because MR-devices will definitely play a role in the future of the internet and I think the way we use and perceive the internet and domains might change. Also keep in mind that Windows 10/8 use apps as term and it seems (to me at least) more superficial and easier to use for some. Maybe the url and thus the domain is something that is in the future not needed?

As long their is competition and al kind of brands the need of unique adress / url is needed.

1. To be independent and in control of own content / policy and not just to be like one facebook page.
2. Anti monopolistic / decentralise qualities of domains and websites.
3. Building a brand.

In the future their must be not only one ultimate casino and one "red" site owned by a handfull of people.

Well I have a smartphone and I hate apps

I always use my mobile whilst out and about to search whatever comes to my mind at that instant moment.

I usually find apps are shitty versions of the full websites I visit.

But has you just pointed out this is personal preference.

And while there is a personal preference there will imo always be a need for both.

Social MR is actually just as relevant in MR as it is in VR. You can teleport someone or their avatar directly into your environment and socialise with them.

I think the bit you are getting a bit stuck with is thinking that MR is just an device for using outside.

And as far as talking about immersion. Watch a video of Holotour. It's like you have completely been transported to a different location from your own living room:

Yeah, the biggest use for MR will be for getting notifications about the real world I think. For example: If you are in a store looking to buy a new lawn mower you could just say "Compare prices" to your smart glasses and your pre-installed price comparison app would do a search for alternatives. Or maybe it will do that automatically if you just stare at the bar code on the price tag for a bit. No need for a website for that type of stuff.

Sure there will eventually be VR-like experiences for MR-glasses too. But they might just use "VR" in their domain name if so.

Anyway, I'm just playing devils advocate here. After all I was the one that started this thread :D And I am holding all sorts of niches VR, AR, MR, 360, 180, Hyper Reality, Enhanced Reality, WebVR, Lightfield, Volumetric, Metaverse...the list goes on. Just want people to think about this stuff before going on a spending spree á la VR again and buying every name under the sun.

I think it will be a while before MR/Mixed Reality tech will be even where VR is today, and by that time it might not even be called that. So I think they do represent a bit of a risky investment outside of the top tier names, more risky than vr/ar/holo. Having said that, this tech eventually will be a trillion dollar industry, so if people are still calling it MR at that time the investments will certainly have paid off.

The thing with adult is most of the gadget makers wont allow adult apps. In that way, adult names are the safest bet for all of these technologies. Having said that, it's not clear to me how for example you're going to go to a website to 'download some MR smut', the way you can now with VR. I mean, MR is an interactive meshing of your real world and the virtual world, not simply 360 prerecorded video as (adult) VR currently is.
I also have my reservations about MR for adult for the reason that 'MR' just doesn't sound very sexy, even without the instinctive 'mister' reading.
