Hey everyone, I noticed H1N1Symptoms.com on Sedo's recent sales section couple days ago. It said it sold for $2500..So today I tried going to the website to see what they done with it and it redirected me to Bing search for "h1n1symptoms" and a quick whois search revealed that MS is the new registrant. I was quite surprised to see it. What do u guys think of it?

That is hilarious who has the authority there to buy such offkey domains, unless its computer virus related. Good to see as I was suprised the dollar value that sale brought in $x,xxx, good sale for a recent reg.

it might be a better promotional tool if 3/10 results for that query on bing were to informative sites instead of sedo properties...

yeah, the search term is 'H1N1Symptoms' instead of 'H1N1 Symptoms'. makes a big difference in the results.

but what would be the point of microsoft doing this? is it because they figure lots of people will be typing that in and they want to expose all those people to bing?

That the only reason i can think of them purchasing the DN.

I find it interesting that DomainTools says Microsoft owns around 25,000 domains.

Well, it could be a good marketing stunt - since a lot of people will be searching for H1N1 information, that's an easy way to weave some MS branding into it.

I agree, though, it's a pretty out-of-the-box move!

Seems Microsoft has some different strategy for Bing, Farecast.com has been forwarding to Bing Travel for quite some time.
Maybe they want to capture traffic in every niche instead of matching with the search quality of Google.

i've never used bing, not even to see how my own names rank in its searches. i admit to being ignorant about how it's faring (haven't read anything about it), but i don't imagine massive numbers of people are flocking to it. what would compel them to? maybe bing needs stunts like this to get people to use it.

on the other hand, i never watch fox 'news,' either, so i'm probably not a reliable barometer of consumer taste.

I've used bing.com a few times. And I notice it seems geared more towards travel topics.

To think they once owned Expedia.
