Legacy registrars, it’s time for a wake-up call.

Domain investors hold the majority stake in this industry—an estimated 85% of all domains, or roughly 306 million out of 360 million worldwide. That’s not a niche group, that’s the backbone of your business. Yet too many of you continue to ignore their needs, operating as though the market hasn’t shifted under your feet.

Here’s the reality: investors aren’t asking for luxuries, they’re asking for basics. Instead, they’re met with clunky restrictions and outdated processes. Some of your platforms still force investors to submit names in batches of only 50 domains at a time when listing for sale—an absurd barrier in an industry where portfolios often span thousands. Others drag their feet, taking weeks to verify ownership that innovative competitors can confirm instantly. And too many still charge for tools that next-gen registrars now provide free of charge.

Even worse, some of you have actively stifled progress by buying out innovative marketplaces only to shut them down—choosing to eliminate competition rather than lead it. That isn’t a strategy. That’s self-sabotage.

Innovation isn’t optional anymore. Investors are your bread and butter, and without them, your platforms lose relevance. Success in this space doesn’t come from size, acquisition sprees, or market dominance—it comes from responsiveness, iteration, and listening.

The future belongs to the registrars who adapt. The rest will fade, dismissed by the very investors they refused to serve. With 306 million domains in their hands, investors have the power to decide who thrives and who gets left behind.
