Story: registrars who compete with their resellers

I am writing a story about domain registrars who try to lure away customers (consciously or inadvertently) from their own resellers and/or compete with their resellers, or who try to take control of a domain from an owner or take control quickly after expiration. Some registrars try to get the customers of their resellers to register directly with them, or try to sell them other services, when domain owners call the registrar directly for help with an issue. Some registrars take back domains within only a few days of expiration. If you've experienced any of the above, or know of someone who has, I would like to speak with you. I will not name the registrar in question in my story. Thank you.

What exactly are you writing about?

"The little known secrets of getting a domain name thru a hosting company."?

"Horror stories you should know about domain registrars and their resellers."?

"Registrars and resellers: whom do you choose?"?

Seriously, though, if it's to help inform people about this, then I wish you well.

Bottom line is this: registrars form reseller agreements to expand. Legal fine
prints between registrars and resellers force the registrar to refer end-users
to the reseller first before stepping in.

Then once the domain name expires, the registrant has no rights to the name
except to renew it or let it go.
