Loopia.se asking for identity verification in order to purchase a domain. Anyone used this registrar before?

I'm in the US and have never had any foreign registrar ask for ID verification when i've purchased domains before. They're asking me to download a third party app. called Truid to verify my identity. I wish they would have stated this before charging my card and taking money out of my account.

I don't feel comfortable with this process this seems like overkill for this type of transaction and therefore I am going to cancel this transaction. I was just curious to know if anyone else has dealt with Loopia and what is their reputation?

Thanks

Yes. Loopia is quite popular in Sweden (especially for .se domains), but you need the government licensed TruID identification account (which is used to log into banks, approve debit/credit card transaction, healthcare scheduling, accounts on landlord pages, etc.) to log in.

So it's really good if you're Swedish and conscious of security, and you want a registrar that you could take legal action against.

But if you're not Swedish then you can't use it.

Interesting,
According to Loopia, it's apart of the process for domain purchases for all foreign customers. So apparently it's something that they incorporate and use for customers outside of Sweden as well.. The TruID thing actually sounds good as an extra layer of protection for everyone. But in my case we aren't required to do this here in the states and i've also purchased domains from several other registrars outside of the US, so it just caught me off guard not something I wanted to invest time into.

At any rate, thanks for your input!

Yeah, I only thought they used loopia.se, but they have an English page at loopia.com. Maybe there's some mistake tied to a payment method or something like that.

A better alternative for .se domains is Inleed (inleed.com, inleed.net, or inleed.se) which is a subsidiary of Yelles, and one of the few Swedish ICANN accredited registrars that doesn't focus on corporate trademarks or reselling. I had ChatGPT run over their terms of agreement, which apparently were really good. They don't share your data unless it's due to legal purposes mandated by EU regulation. Their domains are fairly affordable too.

€8 for a .se registration and €12 for a .se renewal.

They also seem to a get a lot of good reviews on Trustpilot and Swedish reviewing platforms. Although most of those reviews seem to be in Swedish, and most of it for their hosting performance and support.

You could also try one.com, which is a Swedish company located in Denmark that's a subsidiary of the American company Ascio Technologies which is part of Tucows.

But as you can see they're quite a bit pricier, and more aggressive with the upsales. And their reviews are not great.
