I just happened to type in random characters on the Godaddy domain search bar. Here is the result:

    Screenshot 2020-06-26 at 9.21.24 PM.png

    Just look at these aspects:

    • Pricing has been changed to per month instead of per year (which is fine) - normal marketing gimmick
    • Look the far right end - Why it's great
    • They justify by saying that it is a .COM extension(and there could millions of .COM domains)
    • 15 characters or less - I am sure if you type 16, they would show something else.

And so, I did another search with random 16 characters. Here is the result:

    Screenshot 2020-06-26 at 9.25.23 PM.png

Now see the result - it is "unique"

This is why i believe newbies are getting the trap of either buying useless extensions or useless domains.
If you look at appraisal section, you would be puzzled to see literally domains which no one would take for free, being valued at $1400 or so by Godaddy. And newbies fall into the trap.

Well, I think both are at fault. Having said that, Godaddy should have some moral and ethical responsibility as well.

Did you find something like this on Godaddy search? Please share your experience. I don't like the registrar now given this practise.

    Godaddy is not beginner-friendly.

thanks goodness, exact match domain searches of afternic- and premium listings are unaffected (at least as per a couple of searches).

@abstractdomainer - hope you were not logged in ;) Or, you will soon see a bunch of recommendations to purchase slkdk dot something and the like. Inside you account. Everything is logged. I once searched for something non-english which looks like a random letter sequence... makes sense to me only... and they still recommend similar domains inside, as a great addition to my portfolio!

    Exactly! Not at all

I just hope that while I am making other purchases, they don't swoop in these domains for multiple years and I end up wasting $30/$40 because of this.

What's the point of this thread?

They're not wrong. ndfndfkdsnfkjdsnf is unique. There should be some responsibility on behalf of the buyer to not buy such a stupid domain.

What's Godaddy supposed to do here? Alert them to _not_ buy the domain?

No. But still. They have the responsibility to not appraise any domain for an exorbitant price. If you type some normal names, they would appraise it at prices that would sway the buyers to buy the domain.

When I was new to domaining, after browsing many different platforms and I found that Goddaddy is the one has the most gimmicks registrar, I think even a newbie can feel or recognizing it, after comprehensive considerations and evaluations they feel ok decided to do something unethical.

They exist to make money. That's capitalism and there's nothing wrong with that at all.

What's the point with this thread. Yes, we've all had issues (big and small) with GoDaddy. But they're the biggest registrar in the world, and they are just stating the obvious. It's a business.

    Due diligence is our responsibility.

In some point of views it’s called skill! of squeeze..., in order to compensate that feelings they must do greater on customer services.

when a Customer wants to buy something from your Business - would you say "No Please don't buy it".
Assume you sell Cakes and one of your Customers wants to buy a particular Cake - would you say "No that cake is really really bad - strongly recommend not to buy it"?

I dont think GoDaddy as a Business is doing anything unethical or something that is shameful.

that is somewhat right! Almost all domain appraisal companies add an exorbitant price. A use should Just consider 50% of that as the real but approximate vale. Secondly price depends upon an individual's perspective of buying - when he is buying, for what he is buying, etc. For example, the domain coronaVirus.com would be mere $500 or something similar before the pandemic, if it was appraised by an appraisal company, max, it would had gone $1000, but once that becomes a "super hit" word among google searches, then the price will shootup into millions. Also, when the pandemic will be over and corona gets fully eradicated from this planet, again the value of the domain will drop!
