Some argue that shorter domain names are easier to remember, easier to type and far less susceptible to mistakes.Others argue that a longer domain name is the best and usually easier on the human memory.

so which one is the best?

Would really depend on the domain. Something like NewYorkLawyers.com isn't exactly short but is pretty memorable.

It really depends on how memorable that phrase is as Reece stated above.

For a company named Ribotechnik Machine Industries I would get RMI rather than the long one, as it is not memorable and RMI would look much more professional.
Few people would search for that phrase.

For generic type domains, I would go for longer names, they are also better in SERPS. I have even 5 word domains in .com ... simply because they are searched. Decide for yourself, for a business selling Ceiling wall mounts, what would be better CeilingWallmounts.com or cwm.com ? I go for the first one.

it depends on the domain itself. a long domain can be more memorable as long as it makes sense and sounds decent... i wouldn't say that "building-easy-website.blogspot.com" is one of them though...

it depends- a short domain is better if you have billboards on the freeway and only a split second to make your impression.

If you get all your traffic from search it doesn't matter :)

It depends on the name and the way it is marketed. But you can't really say that short is better than long regarding memorability. You can have something like: BestPizzaDelivery.Com and you won't forget that at all. But you can have shipto.com and you might forget it. Regarding mistakes you can make a mistake even typing ebay.com. You can type abya.com easily if you type fast. So in my opinion it's all about the name and not whether it's short or long.
