This is a classic trade off. Thoughts on this? I sometimes feel the shorter domain name, which is an exact keyword match with lower monthly searches (say around ~250k) is better than the longer keyword matched name with higher traffice (say ~10-50MM/mo).

By short I mean less than or equal to 6 characters, and by long I mean 12 and as many as 15 or 16.

i think differently, i would always choose the domain with traffic before the domain without it, IMO domain size doesnt matter if it already has traffic

I take it that by high traffic you mean actual exiting traffic, not high volume searches for the keyword?

the best choice may be the one with the higest CPC, if you're using gkwt

imo...

Interesting. So a high CPC, say $10, is interesting to you, even if it only has ~10-20k of global monthly search volume? I suppose you could gather a dozen domains that match keywords with ~10k/each in global monthly search volume, each having a $10/CPC.

In the past short was usually best but people are typing in long terms much more now vs a few years ago so there is little question imo the long tail with more traffic is much better (withoit taking into consideration things like CPC as Biggie Don pointed out above).

for short term time period, it is the long name better; but for long term, the short name is better.

I suppose that it doesn't really matter how short or long your domain is. Just choose the one that has traffic.

yes, even $0.25 is interesting, with a search volume of less than 10k

i regged this long tail, in April of 2010

www.reusableconstructionmaterials.com

i put up a 1 page mini site w/adsense and the site was on 1st page of G in less than 7 days.

stats for this month:

Totals Since April 2010:
300 34 $25.06

i posted that example to illustrate that GKWT results have soooo many variables that change daily.

if you check those terms today, i bet NONE of you would register them based on today's gkwt numbers

imo...

An excellent example of how you can register a long keyword domain which many domainers would quickly say is worthless but not correct.

Most every day I see long tails freshly available for hand registration, which I feel would be more than likely to get traffic and revenue, especially if developed.

Always find it surprising so many domainers do not realize that (including some experienced ones), and overlook the opportunities.
