COUNTDOWN COMPLETE!

NO MORE 4 LETTER DOMAIN AVAILABLE TO REGISTER!
_______________________________________________________________

Since early 2005, I have been investing/trading with 4 letter domain names. I started this thread due to the large variation in opinions on how many four letter domains there are available. When I started, I heard a range on viewpoints ranging from 200,000 down to nothing. What I learned that most people did not know how many were available.

Sources of Error for the estimates in number of available 4 letter domains include:

Traffic Testers: These are people who buy thousands of domains at a time to see if the domains are being visited and only keep the small percentage of domains that have regular visitors and cancel their orders for the domains that don't have a regular flow of visitors.

Inefficient ways of making estimates: There are over 450 thousand possible 4-Letter domains. There are short cuts that people can take in estimating the number that been registered that don't include all domains. One short cut that is often taken is for somebody to search through a list of previously available 4 letter names that they purchased (or got for free) and assume that all the names that are not on that list are registered.

People quoting old information:The variation in the number available changes all the time. Estimates that are months old are very different than up to date estimates.

People manipulating information for a sale:It definately is true that incorrect information on the available number of 4-letter domains can intensionally be manipulated to sell 4-letter domains at a higher price. Typically the lack of supply tends to motivate people to pay higher prices.

As a 4-letter domain trader, I believe that the information of how many 4-letter domains there are is extremely valuable for two main reasons. Firstly, my pricing of my names is subject to the amount of work it requires for customer to find for similar name. Secondly, if I want to increase my stock of 4-letter names than the information of how many there are at reg fee prices is essential.

I decided to update this thread when the number of available 4-letter domains dropped to the following levels:
22% Remaining - 25th January 2006
19% Remaining - 31st March 2006
16% Remaining - 29th June 2006
13% Remaining - 1st August 2006
10% Remaining - 15th February 2007 (crossed without traffic testing early April)
9% Remaining - 26th February 2007 (crossed without traffic testing early May)
8% Remaining - 2nd March 2007 (crossed without traffic testing in June)
7% Remaining - 21st March 2007 (crossed without traffic testing early July)
6% Remaining - 3rd July 2007(crossed without traffic testing some time in July)
5% Remaining - 1st August 2007(crossed without traffic testing August 11)
4% Remaining - 14th August 2007(crossed late August)
3% Remaining - 15th September 2007(crossed In September)
2% Remaining - 14th October 2007
1% Remaining - 31st October 2007
0% Remaining - 2nd November - COUNTDOWN COMPLETE!

Although, the number of available domains does sometime rise straight after it drops due to traffic testing and people dropping their domains, I don't consider it worth mentioning unless the rise is as significant as a 3% rise in the number of available domains.

Types of Four Letter Domains that have run out include:
- ALL OF THEM!

Since I started this thread important event about four letter domains that are worth mentioning happenned:

1: Late March/Early April 2006 there was a significant shift in the market for brandable (fake words) 4-letter domains and they started selling at significantly higher prices and the market for the names has been a lot more active ever since.

2: In July 2006, a namepros member 3par launched DYYO.com as a site committed to educating people about 4 letter domains. This is an excellent resource for those who are interested in 4 letter domain names.

3: In early February 2007. All the 4 letter domains starting with the letter A ran out.

4: wasistdas won QQNQ.COM, PCZV.COM & IQKE.COM for the competition for predicting when the 4 Letter domains would run out

Initial Post
Less than 23% of the 4 letter domain names are unregistered. I thought I'd try to keep this thread updated every time I discover another 1% reduction. I am now routinely checking the percentage of unregisted 4 letter domains.

Please no offence to anyone if I start comparing my omzn.com with amazon.com ;)

I've been buying some LLLL.com in auctions and every now and then I would hand reg. one or two.

Here are my new hand regged

ZNZU.com
LXIZ.com

They are not great but I'm sure they are worth more than reg. fee.

EDIT 23:10 BST: Five names now taken. Lots more still available.

I have just published a really good list of expired and available to register LLLL.com domains on my website.

Please click my signature to view it for FREE :)

It contains names without QXYZ, a name with three premium letters and a Z and another with a double end letter.

Enjoy the list.

Matt.

Throughout the lifetime of this thread, people have been posting about how LLLL's would never run out and how all the remaining ones are total crap, etc. Earlier this year I ignored those people and registered dozens, including EJML, EOCJ, JLMO, UZOQ, ZISR, etc.

I get happier about the decision every day. It's amazing how much better "crap" names look once there are no more like them left for registration. Similarly, the LLLL's remaining now may not look so hot, but will shine much brighter once they are all gone.

... From now on I will only post when I agree with the OP. We'll learn a lot around here by agreeing with each other all the time...
Firstly, I am a strong believer in LLLL and their future and have some 100 of them in my "portfolio".
Secondly, I always read your posts with great interest. I think your voice of "criticism" is fresh and something we "LLLL believers" need.

You have some valid points and I agree with you in the direction of remaining LLLL. No way in hell they are gonna attract end users, no end user is going build his/her brand/business around lets say qzxy.com. They are for domainers to other domainers. Nevertheless I do think they will prove to be good ROI in the future. IMO.

So Jacal1, please let this one slide and keep on posting :)
Cheers!

10110 (!!) remaining. :)

Decline is going very slow but the magic threshold of 10k WILL be crossed soon. Very soon!

No worries :)

Names that were considered bad few months ago are now getting registered quickly once available, so the lowest quality definition for LLLL.com domains just gets pushed further down as less are left. Same thing as it was with LLL.com, 3 letters ;)

Allen, You have a valid point and Lorenzo's reaction was not right and not funny. If thread continues to go downhill with this level of immature behaviour, I will ask the moderators to close it immediately.

I have personally had similar comments made towards me in other threads (not Namepros) and it took me a long time to recover from them. The best thing to do in this situation is to just ignore the funeral joke and move on.

I do value your opinion as I have personally experienced the loss of spending too much on the wrong type of domains and have also seen others experience it too. I strongly believe that while there are some who will profit from 4 letter domains, others will lose a lot from buying them too early, buying too many and/or not having the correct strategies in place to sell them at good prices. I also believe that some people who are not buying 4 letter domains will make more money that if they focussed on 4 letter domains for a variety of reasons. Your opinion puts a bit of balance to some of the domainers (including me) who have a tendency to inflate the significance of how great 4 letter domain names are.

My view has always been that the greatest attribute of 4 letter domain names is the liquidity factor. This will really come into play when they all run out a lot more significantly than today. You can see with the example of 3 character .com domains, that 3 character domainers/investors know that they can escape the market with something in their pocket very quickly. Other domainers often feel trapped and get forced to either sell domains for dramatically less than they consider them to be worth or keep paying fees that they don't want to because they can't justify selling the domains so cheap.

I did not know that a joke would be a major issue.
I guess that I come from another culture when we like to have fun sometimes.
My mistake.
I won`t posting anymore in this thread.

Best regards

Based on the many comments that I have seen you write before, I think it probably was a joke. I come from a culture where that joke would be treated as a threat.

My wife is from a mediterranean background and I have spent the past few years learning a lot about a different way of communication. Words reflect a lot more emotion and less intent than I was used to. I have learned to respect your culture a lot as issues within mediterranean cultures can often be sorted out through discussion where in other cultures may end up in violence.

Don't worry too much if you confuse people with your emotional style of communication. You have a lot of good insight to share.

Your posts are always good in here italiandragon. Don't stop.

I understood your joke perfectly, I guess us Aussies are a lot more relaxed than many other communities around the world.
