COUNTDOWN COMPLETE!

NO MORE 4 LETTER DOMAIN AVAILABLE TO REGISTER!
_______________________________________________________________

Since early 2005, I have been investing/trading with 4 letter domain names. I started this thread due to the large variation in opinions on how many four letter domains there are available. When I started, I heard a range on viewpoints ranging from 200,000 down to nothing. What I learned that most people did not know how many were available.

Sources of Error for the estimates in number of available 4 letter domains include:

Traffic Testers: These are people who buy thousands of domains at a time to see if the domains are being visited and only keep the small percentage of domains that have regular visitors and cancel their orders for the domains that don't have a regular flow of visitors.

Inefficient ways of making estimates: There are over 450 thousand possible 4-Letter domains. There are short cuts that people can take in estimating the number that been registered that don't include all domains. One short cut that is often taken is for somebody to search through a list of previously available 4 letter names that they purchased (or got for free) and assume that all the names that are not on that list are registered.

People quoting old information:The variation in the number available changes all the time. Estimates that are months old are very different than up to date estimates.

People manipulating information for a sale:It definately is true that incorrect information on the available number of 4-letter domains can intensionally be manipulated to sell 4-letter domains at a higher price. Typically the lack of supply tends to motivate people to pay higher prices.

As a 4-letter domain trader, I believe that the information of how many 4-letter domains there are is extremely valuable for two main reasons. Firstly, my pricing of my names is subject to the amount of work it requires for customer to find for similar name. Secondly, if I want to increase my stock of 4-letter names than the information of how many there are at reg fee prices is essential.

I decided to update this thread when the number of available 4-letter domains dropped to the following levels:
22% Remaining - 25th January 2006
19% Remaining - 31st March 2006
16% Remaining - 29th June 2006
13% Remaining - 1st August 2006
10% Remaining - 15th February 2007 (crossed without traffic testing early April)
9% Remaining - 26th February 2007 (crossed without traffic testing early May)
8% Remaining - 2nd March 2007 (crossed without traffic testing in June)
7% Remaining - 21st March 2007 (crossed without traffic testing early July)
6% Remaining - 3rd July 2007(crossed without traffic testing some time in July)
5% Remaining - 1st August 2007(crossed without traffic testing August 11)
4% Remaining - 14th August 2007(crossed late August)
3% Remaining - 15th September 2007(crossed In September)
2% Remaining - 14th October 2007
1% Remaining - 31st October 2007
0% Remaining - 2nd November - COUNTDOWN COMPLETE!

Although, the number of available domains does sometime rise straight after it drops due to traffic testing and people dropping their domains, I don't consider it worth mentioning unless the rise is as significant as a 3% rise in the number of available domains.

Types of Four Letter Domains that have run out include:
- ALL OF THEM!

Since I started this thread important event about four letter domains that are worth mentioning happenned:

1: Late March/Early April 2006 there was a significant shift in the market for brandable (fake words) 4-letter domains and they started selling at significantly higher prices and the market for the names has been a lot more active ever since.

2: In July 2006, a namepros member 3par launched DYYO.com as a site committed to educating people about 4 letter domains. This is an excellent resource for those who are interested in 4 letter domain names.

3: In early February 2007. All the 4 letter domains starting with the letter A ran out.

4: wasistdas won QQNQ.COM, PCZV.COM & IQKE.COM for the competition for predicting when the 4 Letter domains would run out
_______________________________________________________________
Initial Post
Less than 23% of the 4 letter domain names are unregistered. I thought I'd try to keep this thread updated every time I discover another 1% reduction. I am now routinely checking the percentage of unregisted 4 letter domains.

Hello My Name Pros friends and fellow LLLL.com investors.

I have put together a list, only hours ago, listing all of the remaining LLLL.coms that contain state abbreviations.

-You gotta go somewhere with the remaining letters! :kickass:

I have posted the list on my website here: http://www.buydomainnamesforsale.com/LLLL_us_states.htm

Feel free to stop by, check it out and hopefully register a name.

This list would not be possible if it were not for my eyes (they hurt now) and the DYYO search, thank you DYYO:)

Post here and let me know if this helped you at all, I hope so!

Your forum friend,
GG

It's been on DYYO front page for couple of days now I believe. That is amazing news!

Did you see this coming when you started this thread VURG? ;)

I think a lot of people saw it coming. There is certainly a lot of people who invested more than me. I sold a few LLLL.com through TDNAM to a buyer who owned approx 6000. BD has a lot of awesome LLLL.com.

.com registration increasing at 25+% a year for the last few years. Early last year there when the thread was started there were between 320 and 330 thousand available. 25% more than 320 is 400. 25% more than 400 is 500. (500,000 > 456976) LLLL.com registration seemed to increase proportionally to .com registration. (another interesting stat. There seems to be a 2:1 ratio of LLLL.com registered to LLLL.net)

The CVCV.com thing shocked me though. If I realised how popular they were, I would have got some while I could. The only one I did get I sold for $29.

My main emphasis on the thread was to help provide stability in the reports on how many 4 letter domains there were. Before the thread the range in reports on the number of available domains fluctuated between 50,000 and 150,000 and often people would be quoting unreliable stats on how many there were. This poor information was inspiring people to buy too many too quickly and losing lots of money. (There was a thread in Sep 2005 where majority vote was that they would run out in 2005)

My method of determining how many were available wasn't great as I used a sample of 2600 random domains and so I was very relieved when Steve (3par) came in and provided very routine and very reliable stats through DYYO.com. I don't know what he does and I don't care but I think it's an awesome site.

I missed the 3 char .net rush and so I set out to run scans on 3 char .orgs . I modified [post=1125903]Jim's script[/post] to do that and registered a bunch of them before realizing that there was more money to be made in 4 letter .coms.

Since then I have been following both this thread and running my own scans. The benefit of running your own scans is that you can store the data in a database and then query it at leisure. For ex: I can query the db to find me all .coms that have letter-L-vowel-letter combo like Qloy.com or letter-vowel-L-letter like zelj.com .

Running a scan takes upto 28 hours at times. But it can be fully automated with ease.

This thread took off 3 months ago and seems like there is 5-10 comments a day now. LLLL.com has been a hot topic on Namepros for the last 2 years and it looks like the 4 letter domains running out is finally happenning this year. It's quite exciting but also very frustrating as there is the common thought "Why didn't I buy more good ones while I could?"

I know the answer to that. In my case it is because I don't have the money to buy all the domains I find. For ex: I focused on what I thought were pronounceable but I found Qayj.com , Qayv.com and similar names that I had to pass on.

For LLLL.coms? , currently?? Why? LOL

I can do my own, manual scan, with my eyes, in seconds - minutes depending on what and how in-depth. Toggling into Excel to paste the results.

Actually its 28 hours. And thats how long it takes to scan all ~450,000 possible combos.

I'll just post a clean table tommorro.. I'm tired.. it's late.. err.. early.

Until later today..

Check out the available domain name section, there is a massive LLLL drop list there starting with the letter E.

http://www.namepros.com/available-domain-names/362217-llll-com-big-e-drop.html

It's always nice to go hunting after a drop ;) And better when someone does it for you!

The problem, if you had one, with my list of available LLLL.coms containing US state abbreviations is now FIXED and available. I will update the results tomorrow but I imagine most are still available.

You may need to refresh the page.
