Link farms VS Web Directories

Everyone knows there is a difference between link farms and directories but How does Google and other search engines bots understand the difference between them ?

Well, in my opinion, a link farm is a site where all the links are placed together without any sort of categorization. And link farms usually have a lot of links without much content (or text).

Some people do try to make a directory but unknowingly they make a link farm.

Some examples would be like:

Using a readymade category dump. (If your directory is red or blue. Bots will only see the structure and the content of it) Which in this case is similar to 1000's of other directories which already use that category dump. To overcome this try to make unique categories and linking structure. Sometimes even messing around with the default Mod_rewrite style is also beneficial.

Try to fill in the categories with good websites that even humans would find it useful.

Admin approval should be must to regulate the links submitted and monitor the sites to which the directory is linking to.

No necessary but can be very useful if you have a custom script with custom structure for the directory. If not then try to use different combinations of the mods for the given directory script.

Use RSS feeds or other things to put in some related content in the directory rather then just the links.

I just saw a mod which enables a category to appear only when there is a listing. If there is no listing, it doesn't appear on the directory. Interesting mod.
