I used to work for company_A who had a development project call it project_A. I was involved heavily in the project and registered four domains in my name (project_A)uk.com .biz, .net and .info. this was to simplify setting up a web presence for the product and not for personal gain.

Company_A sold my part of the company to company_B, but not the project_A which was sold to a third company, company_C. The sale did not include the domains or website, just title to the product.

I now work for company_B, the project is with company_C

Company_C know of my previous experience with project_A and have just asked me to point the domains at their hosting. I am still the registered owner and host the domains at my host, therefore control them fully. I have done as asked with a custom A record in DNS.

I suspect that I need a legal agreement with company_C to avoid problems down the line. I have not asked for any fee or recompense, I am just holding their domains. I have implied that I could push them the domains, they do not seem very interested.

Please comment as to what I should do next.

Based on what you described so far, you sure need it.

Amplifying a bit more, my manager on project_A left company_A before the sale of my part to company_B to go and work for company_C. He was instrumental in transferring the project_A to that company. So I have a personal relationship there.

I have no worries about being sued for squatting on their domains, my concern is more with action or non action on my part (domain registry or hosting) causing the sites to go down. The project relies on web communication for its success, data transfer etc.

I think I shall draft a cover letter for the above to limit my liability to zero. Comments?

thanks for your interest Dave,

Andy

This is my take on it... without knowing a lot about the situation.

Definitely get a written agreement.... and make sure they at least cover your costs for the name, or request that they take over management of the name(s). Personally I would do everything I could to make sure they take control, as you are the one taking the risk and responsibility for maintaining the name records. And, I wouldn't want that responsibility.

You might consider stipulating in any agreement that you "make no warranty to the availability or merchantability of the domains or domain records"... that way should you forget to renew or make a bad change on accident, and correct it in a timely manner, you will (hopefully) be safe.

Just my 2 cents...

From what I understood you want to give them the domains. You said you implied that. Why don't you ask them if they want the domains?
Tell them: Either I push the domains or you don't get the nameserver change.
