There needs to be a requirement that the person posting in the Legal Issues & Disputes section disclose his state and country of residence. Jurisdictional issues can be important with respect to who can give him advice and the rules that apply to the issue(s).

Why would they need to declare that information if they are posting about something that has happened? For example, the RegisterFly threads in that section....what use would posting the users country/state be?

Can you expand on you're post as its a little unclear.

Cheers,

Rick

What about Province... lol.. No it would be 10 times less hassel. As this is an international forum. Not just US..I like the country flag idea.. But for just legal issues it is pointless.

I do however see what you are saying..

I agree with you...it's a great idea. It would save people from posting "it depends on where you live" and would make things much more streamlined. The only problem I could potentially see with it is if people may have the same problem but live somewhere else, but I guess that exists with the current system as well.

I nod in favor of iNod ;).

From Canada too. It's an international forum. If they want to disclose that information it would help but to make it mandatory at this point just doesn't make sense.

Not Pointless

The law, its interpretation, application, levels of enforcement, and who is authorized to give legal advice varies among jurisdictions. So if you want the best chance of receiving competent legal advice in this forum, you should disclose the jurisdiction in which you live.

Agreed.
But if we are being complete, we should also ask for the registrar, the registrar's domicile, the registry, the registry's domicile, the complainant's address and any states in which they might do business in addition to where they are domiciled, etc. etc. etc.

Luckily this isn't a law firm, and there is no attorney-client relationship formed that would require that level of diligence (The conflict checks alone would require many pages of posts, I'm sure.). You'll see the advice, "Go get JBH or other Domain Name Attorney" quite often specifically for this reason.

Most information provided is generic in nature, and for procedural issues like UDRP or other binding arbitration, there really isn't that much difference no matter where you live.

And lastly, most of the "issues" that are posted are more along the lines of "I just registered 'microsoftsnewproduct.com', can I get in trouble?"

So I agree, homebuyer, that it would make sense to have all of the information available - but practicality dictates that it not be "required", :imho: , but perhaps a recommendation?

Just my .02
