.kid domain on the way?

Europe starts work on child-protection TLD

The European parliament is now working on a recommendation for a proposal on "the protection of children and human dignity" in the audiovisual and information services world.

Parliament member and editor of the proposal, Marielle de Sarnez, is recommending the creation of a new generic top level domain, .kid, which will be reserved for "permanently monitored sites which would undertake to respect minors and their rights, on pain of criminal penalties".

Marielle de Sarnez told AFP: "The latest statistics show that time spent on the internet by young people is now greater than that spent in front of the television. At the same time, there are currently around 260 million pornographic pages available on the web."

The text proposed by the European parliament will now be examined by the Council members, before eventually being put before members of the European parliament for a second reading.

Interesting news... But I can't imagine how a new domain extension would protect children when they can still browse using other extensions too. Unless parents would block all extensions except .kid on kid's computer. But seems like kids are smart now and they would found a way around

Anyway, what do you think? Whould you register any .kid domain?

I agree with you in part, I think we are going to have to many tlds to soon, they should hold them of for a while.

I agree, there's going to be too many TLD's, but I guess it's another way to get some awesome names.
Good money in new TLD's I guess, as you can get all dictionary words, combinations, 2 character, 3 character etc etc.
I've never really been into domains, however I do find it fascinating how people can earn $xxx,xxx off a website name..
Holding the TLD's at a halt wouldn't make a difference to the current sales, however: Adding another TLD - that would make a greater income for alot of domain registers I guess.

Well maybe it would be not allowed to register such domains. Seems like .kid domains will be monitored:

The .kid domain would be reserved for websites with content designed for children and would be regularly monitored by an independent authority

Cant remember how much lol but its alot of money to even suggest a new one let alone get one so someone, somewhere is making alot of money out of new ones. Guess we may be in for a few more :blink:
