I'm usually the hip and current one in the room among my friends. Every new term I catch most times.

But I'm embarrassed to say I missed the repurposing of the name "Karen" into a derogatory term for privileged entitled white women. Lol

Since when?

Just Google "Karen meaning" for explanation.

Interestingly.
karen is a member of an indigenous people of eastern Burma (Myanmar) and western Thailand. The language of the Karen, probably Sino-Tibetan.

Also there are 46,105 domains with the keyword Karen.

Anyone ever heard of this repurposing of the name Karen.

Curious to know who started this.

Similar to OkBoomer.com coined by some kid.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
There are whole YouTube channels devoted to this term.

I'm always left scratching my head because I find that the person pulling out their phone to record someone in a weak moment is just as offensive. Maybe more so.

I don’t think it’s fair to liken disparaging remarks to “weak moments”.

Oh, did you hear. They are removing the terms master/slave in computing terminology.. because it totally clouded my upbringing in terms of understanding the difference between hard drives and humans.

Lol, funniest thing I read all day :)

You don't cure hate and ignorance with more of the same.

I think it is hypocritical to say don't fight hate with hate while downplaying derogatory statements and racially-fueled harassment. Recording and holding people accountable for their despicable and racist behaviour is "hate" yet the person who actually made the remark simply made a "mistake" or had a "weak moment"? Is that not hate? Call a spade a spade.

People need to change the narrative from I know what X said was wrong and disgusting but there's no need to destroy his life to I know X's life is destroyed but he really shouldn't have had said those nasty things.

Are you so sure that everyone ever portrayed in those public freak-out videos is just a bad person?

I think anyone who uses a racial slur or makes a racially-charged 911 call is a bad person.

To label offensive, often threatening or illegal behavior, as weak moments is a stretch

Also, if they weren't filming it we'd still be in denial as a society
There's always one very important thing missing from these videos: context. I agree that some of those videos show very offensive and threatening behaviour. But whatever provoked it may have been just as bad or even worse.

Honestly, I'm fine with a little denial if it means that people aren't always pulling out their phones anytime they think they might be able to capture a viral moment.

What do any of these political threads being pushed into the popular section have to do with domaining?

A lot ppl have two faces. I think it’s good they recording them and exposing them. They need to be exposed. If they lose they job then that’s good for them . Maybe next time they will think before they act. I mean Central Park Karen knew tht her calling police and lying could potentially end bad for guy because he was Black. Screw her job tht could have cost him his life and she knew that . Why do you think she specifically said “ and I’m gonna tell them your an African American Male?” That’s self explanatory and you want to worry about her job. 👀.... And Karen ain’t a racist term . If you say Karen is a racist term you might as well say Felicia is a racist term ( bye Felicia)?
I just find that we now live in a society where we're too eager to destroy people's lives. "They deserve what they get" has become too common of a refrain.

You don't cure hate and ignorance with more of the same.

Well everybody got they own opinion. I don’t think everything should be exposed because ppl do make mistakes but that wasn’t a mistake ok! A mistake is not (oh you put on the fake face when u out in public because u want to keep up appearance and you put the real face back on when u feel relaxed and unwatched) that’s not a mistake thts oh you got caught slipping....she deserved what she got...and don’t matter what happened (which Nothing probably did outside fact that he was black and asked her to leash the dog.) it’s not ok to lie like That. He could have been George Floyd because she felt like something provoked her to lie. And I saw a Karen that attacked a white lady and she beat the breaks off her , so it’s not just a Karen tht attacks blacks, Asian,Arabs etc...... Karen attacks everybody....
My comments are more general and philosophical in nature.

For the specific situation you're addressing, I'm not saying that woman should be supported for her actions. I'm just saying that, as a society, we all benefit a lot more from a positive "Let's teach each other" mentality than a "You deserve to have your life destroyed" mentality.

This "Karen" thing even has it's own Wikipedia? seriously?!?! lol

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_(pejorative)

Karen is a pejorative term used in the United States and other English-speaking countries for a woman perceived to be entitled or demanding beyond the scope of what is considered appropriate or necessary. A common stereotype is that of a racist white woman who uses her privilege to demand her own way at the expense of others. Depictions also include demanding to "speak to the manager", being an anti-vaxxer, or having a particular bob cut hairstyle. As of 2020, the term was increasingly being used as a general-purpose term of disapproval for middle-aged white women.

Origin
The term may have originated on Black Twitter as a meme used to describe white women who "tattle on Black kids' lemonade stands".[1] It has also been described as originating with black women but having been co-opted by white men.[1][2][3] University of Virginia media researcher Meredith Clark said that the idea of a white woman in the vicinity of whom blacks needed to be careful because she wouldn't hesitate to use her "privilege" at the expense of others, "has always been there; it just hasn't always been so specific to one person's name. Karen has gone by different names. Back in the '90s, when 'Baby Got Back' came out, it was Becky."[1]

Another use of the term Karen as an internet meme dates to an anonymous Reddit user, Fuck_You_Karen, who posted rants denigrating his ex-wife Karen, whom he alleged had taken both his children and, later, his house during divorce proceedings. The posts led to the creation of a subreddit in 2017, r/FuckYouKaren, to both compile a narrative and share memes about the posts. Since Fuck_You_Karen deleted his account, the subreddit refocused to memes about the stereotype in general rather than one specific woman.[4][5]

The name Karen had negative connotations predating the Internet meme, the notable uses being Lorraine Bracco's depiction of Karen Friedman Hill in the 1990 film Goodfellas, and Amanda Seyfried's ditzy schoolgirl character in the 2004 film Mean Girls. Other noted uses of Karen as a joke punchline include Dane Cook's 2005 sketch "The Friend Nobody Likes" from his album Retaliation,[5] and a 2016 Internet meme regarding a woman in an advert for the Nintendo Switch console who exhibits antisocial behavior and is given the nickname "antisocial Karen."[4][6]

Meaning and use

Pictures of Kate Gosselin are often used to depict Karen,[4][7] including the "can-I-speak-to-your-manager haircut".[8]
Kansas State University professor Heather Suzanne Woods, whose research interests include memes, said a Karen's defining characteristics are "entitlement, selfishness, a desire to complain" and that a Karen "demands the world exist according to her standards with little regard for others, and she is willing to risk or demean others to achieve her ends.”[1] Rachel Charlene Lewis, writing for Bitch media, agrees, saying a Karen "sees no one as an individual, instead moving through the world prepared to fight faceless conglomerate of lesser-than people who won’t give her what she wants and feels she deserves. She’ll wield the power that, yes, might be very different from that of a white man, as she makes her demands. And that feeling of entitlement is what makes her, undeniably, a Karen."[2]

The Karen meme carries several stereotypes, the most notable being the stereotype that a Karen will demand to "speak with the manager" of a hypothetical service provider.[4][9] Other stereotypes include anti-vaccination beliefs, racism,[10] use of Facebook and a particular bob haircut with blond highlights; pictures of Kate Gosselin are often used to depict Karen,[7] and her bob is sometimes called the "can-I-speak-to-your-manager haircut".[5][4][11][9]

There has been some debate as to whether "Karen" is a slur.[12] While the term is used exclusively in a pejorative manner towards a person of a specific race and gender, some have argued that "Karen" lacks the historical context to be considered a slur, and that calling it one trivializes actual discrimination.[13] Others argue that the targets of the term have immense privilege, and that "an epithet that lacks the power to discriminate is just an insult."[12] Hadley Freeman argued that use of the meme has become less about describing behavior than controlling it and "telling women to shut up".[14] Jennifer Weiner, writing in the New York Times during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, said the meme had succeeded in silencing her, saying she had had to balance her desire to complain about a nearby man coughing into the open air, hawking and spitting on the sidewalk, with her fear of being called a Karen.[15]

In April 2020, journalist and radical feminist Julie Bindel asked on her Twitter feed, "Does anyone else think the Karen-slur is woman-hating and based on class prejudice?"[16] Freeman replied, saying it was "sexist, ageist, and classist, in that order". In May 2020, Kaitlyn Tiffany, writing in The Atlantic, asked, "Is a Karen just a woman who does anything at all that annoys people? If so, what is the male equivalent?", saying the meme was being called misogynistic.[1] Also in May 2020, Nina Burleigh wrote the memes "are merely excuses to heap scorn on random middle-aged white women."[17] Matt Schimkowitz, a senior editor at Know Your Meme, said the term "just kind of took over all forms of criticism towards white women online."[5]

Examples
The mid-2019 formation of Tropical Storm Karen in the Atlantic hurricane basin led to memes likening the storm to the stereotype; several users made jokes about the storm wanting to "speak with the manager", with images photoshopped to include the "Karen haircut" on either the hurricane or its forecast path.[18]

In December 2019, Australian media reported widely that in the town of Mildura, a woman named Karen had been filmed trying to pull down an Aboriginal Flag which was being displayed by her neighbors. Despite her efforts she was unable to pull down the flag, leading to a Twitter hashag #TooStrongForYouKaren and other social media responses.[19][20]

During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, the term was used to describe women abusing Asian-American health workers due to the virus's origins in China,[21] those hoarding essential supplies such as toilet paper, and both those who policed others' behavior to enforce quarantine[22] and those who protested the continuance of the restrictions because they prevented them visiting hair salons,[1] prompting one critic to ask whether the term had devolved into a general purpose criticism for middle-aged white women.[1] Use of the term increased from 100,000 mentions on social media in January 2020 to 2.7 million mentions in May 2020.[17]

In May 2020 Christian Cooper, writing about the Central Park birdwatching incident, said Amy Cooper's "inner Karen fully emerged and took a dark turn" when he started videoing the encounter.[23] He recorded her calling the police and telling them that an "African-American man" was threatening her life.[24][23]

You should assume you are being recorded anytime you step outside your home as you likely are and act accordingly. People recording things is for proof and is legal. If people choose to show themselves as racist, bigoted, vile and any number of other vices including criminal ones in a public arena they should know it is likely being caught on film.

I am grateful for the filming of atrocious behavior. People, including the cops, can’t talk their way out of something and lie when there is proof. You lost your job, racist lady? Oh well. Everyone is responsible for their own shitty behavior. Would you believe half the stories out there without the filming of it? Many would not.

I'm referring to the comments made by the above posters who are grateful when any bad behaviour is caught on camera.

By that logic, wouldn't it be beneficial to catch all bad behaviour on camera?

Like @PreciousNickia said, if you're polite and respectful, you'll never have anything to worry about.
Polite and respectful people have died due to false accusations over the years. That's the whole problem.

Nope I wouldn’t feel upset.. It’s not lumping all ppl named Karen together!
It’s about a particular woman named Karen displayed a particular type of behavior. So now when you see other women who name is what ever (Ain’t gotta b Karen) acting the way tht particular Karen acted then they become like tht Karen . What you feel like they need to put a last name on it? When ppl say “bye Felicia” they not referencing every body name Felicia. They talking about Felicia off friday
But different ppl have different point of views. N tht fine. To each it’s own

In denial of what? That there are some people in society who still are not nice and treat everyone with respect?
In denial that situations like those documented on film even occur. Been denying it for centuries

Point being some people are assumed never to be the one at fault

We know they occur, we know the idiots that do it are just that - idiots. But that does not mean it is a major problem, well apart from some people who wish to portray it as such. If it was common then everyone would see it constantly, they do not because it is not a common event.

She put his very being in danger, and he did absolutely nothing wrong - she did. Why are you even advocating for that? If her life is ruined, she made her own bed. That situation was nothing short of ridiculous. She wasn't the victim. Full stop.
I'm not advocating for her behaviour.

I'm just wondering if you want to live in a world where, at any moment, your own mistakes and slip-ups could be posted online for all to judge and mock.

Was her behaviour acceptable? No. Was there a much better way to deal with it? Big time.

You also don't cure hate and ignorance if there is no accountability for your (negative) actions.

I see both sides on this.

Some people are just assholes in life. Up until the modern era they have largely been able to be that way with limited accountability. With the internet and social media it certainly can shine light on that behavior.

They can learn that there are ramifications for their actions.

At the same time, having every moment of your life potentially being recorded for people on the internet to see is not really a positive. Once that is online, it is there for good.

There are many people's lives who have been damaged via videos that they did not intent to release. The Star Wars kid meme for example.

This is a good documentary on the subject - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winnebago_Man

I really have kind of a dim view on social media it's impact on society in general. It is way to easy to spread misinformation and other damaging nonsense. You have kids now subject to 24/7 cyber bullying.

Brad
Great points.

Accountability is a positive for sure. I just don't like how quick we are to condemn people without knowing the full story.

There is also Ken, the male equivalent. Aka Costco Ken from recent news.

Brad

Works well because there's already a Ken M!

I heard of Karen before... but I thought they were making fun of Karen, plankton's wife from Spongebob. People would name their discord bots Karen... etc.... dating back 2017. So I thought it was a Spongebob Meme

but lo and behold it means something else. Karen doesn't have to be a white woman. For general usage, it could just be a female who complains a lot or gives people a hard time.
