New bidders showed up at last minute. Let’s see if they will pay up

I just checked and Nameservers were changed to Dan and then Afternic after 2021.

So it seems that the previous owner who paid $625,000 for the domain in 2021 is a domainer.

If that's the case, the only viable reason for the expiration of a domain name that's more than half-a-million dollars is the death of the owner.

It's odd that Namecheap wanted to auction this with no reserve. $108,000 loss?
Maybe they forgot to renew and it went to the expired auction. :greedy:

Yeah how a registrar forgets to renew their own name. Why would this not be registered 10 years out?

Fun fact, I once forgot to renew my company domain (which I was using for the website and mail) and I only noticed after I started wondering why I was not getting expiration reminders (for other domains, that were already flashing red in my registrar panel). I had the domain in another account, so it didn't mingle with the ones I was listing for sale etc. ;) But yeah, I reactivated it after a few days, didn't let it drop.

I'd like to think you wouldn't have forgotten to renew the domain name if you bought it for $625k less than 4 years ago.

$625,000 is money for a decent house in most places in the world.

(Un)fortunately I'm not running the world's 2nd biggest registrar. ;)

It was auctioned off on their own platform so no commission to pay anyone.

They can write off the loss as marketing cost because of all the coverage for this auction.

Still not a smart thing to do.

Namecheap allows a registrant to renew a name even after it's in an active auction.

So they could have gotten the publicity and still retain control of the domain name.

Instead, they paid $108k (loss) plus the loss in potential revenue from selling the domain name to an end user.

A 2-letter .com domain name in the hands of a domain registrar that doesn't need the money should fetch a minimum of $5M.

It's a weird sale.

Interestingly enough the domains sold for $625,000 to a reseller through qeip.com 4 years ago.

Z is a terrible letter for abbreviations, and honestly I think the buyer would've been better off putting his money into an index fund because I don't see enough potential end-users for this domain to warrant a half-a-million dollar investment. Sure, it's a two-letter .com, but that's all it has got going for it.

Not even it.com sold for that much, and that's a globally recognized term for information technology.

The only documented two-letter domain sales that have exceeded $5M are fb.com (15 years ago) for $8.5M, and we.com (10 years ago) for $8M.

Maybe Kirkendall just test the waters
Maybe will renew & auction will be nulled
