I saw the following story featured on drudgereport.com yesterday (Nov 18):

Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, Taj Mahal are candidates for new seven wonders of the world .... Switzerland (AP) - A global competition to name the new seven wonders of the world is attracting widespread interest, with more than 20 million people voting so far, organizers say.
(results t.b.a. on 07-07-07 ... now that's pure marketing); story link:
http://www.breitbart.com/news/na/cp_u111804A.xml.html

Story also mentions that Stonehenge is also in the running. (I like to see that as eiffeltower.mobi, stonehenge.mobi and pyramids.mobi are my only geographical/tourism names). I envision developed sites with historical info, travel tips, and site advertising/sponsorship by travel agents, local hotels, etc.

Do you have a good travel/geographical/wonder type of .mobi domain?
Post it here along with your reasons for registering it or ideas for developing it.

Unfortunately I think they are only looking for man-made objects. Devil's Tower, Yosemite and Grand Canyon are some of my favorites. (The last being one of my favorite .mobi's too:))

As for man-made stuff the US national highway system blows them all away but it is way too boring. Wikipedia notes the total length at 160,000 miles (256,000 kilometers) and it is growing every day.

Thanks for the catch namewaiter. Interesting story and it has been in several other websites and newpapers that I've seen in the last few days.

I sent dot mobi Stonehenge in a group of names to be considered for the March T.R.A.F.F.I.C. auction. Maybe I can unearth a nice sale there.

Kind of spooky that archeaology thing when you think about it though. Digging up remains from thousands of years ago. Maybe an archived tapedrive of NP will be unearthed by our great-great-great......great-grandchildren so they'll see how we lived and thought in the early 2000's. Of course they'll all be referred to by their given .mobi surnames ... ;)

:D Of course they will. I see Mobi becoming big. But imagine if it truely becomes as big as .com but bigger because of the 4 times as many phones as computer thing.

Imagine our mobi names being more valueable than .com names.

It's good to dream

Anyone care to pick up the tab?

Saw this "Pyramids" news online today:

Wealthy foodies can mark their calendars for Dec. 12, 2008, when top chefs from around the world will be flown to Egypt to cook a dinner in front of the ancient Pyramids of Giza, organizer Deepak Ohri said Monday.

The price for dining beside the pyramids has not yet been set, but it will cost less than $10,000 per person, said Ohri, the managing director of Bangkok's luxury Lebua hotel, the event planner behind the dinners that are boldly titled "Epicurean Masters of the World."

Talks are under way with authorities, Ohri said, noting that organizers are "considering" giving profits from the dinner to an organization or charity that deals with conserving the Seven Wonders of the World. The pyramids are the only surviving structure from the traditional list of architectural marvels.

I went with a more generic route with FamousLandmarks.mobi. I had envisioned a site listing famous landmarks around the world.

Interesting articles, thank you.

In response to your question: I seem to have over a dozen travel and/or geographical .mobis, such as:

Geographical:

counties - 84,400,000 Google hits for the plural form, many more for the singular

atlases - 7,170,000 Google hits for the plural form, many more for the singular

TimezoneMap - 121,000 Google hits as an exact spaced phrase

Travel (mostly to Italy for some reason):

orario - 21,100,000 Google hits, being the Italian word for a (train/plane/bus) timetable or departure/arrival schedule.

passengers - 38,900,000 Google hits for the plural form, 58,600,000 for the singular

Crema - 15,400,000 Google hits, a minority of which relate to the northern Italian city of Crema with a population of 33,000 people and a cathedral that is the seat of a Catholic bishop. The Spanish meanings are probably much more useful in a mobi context.

italiani - Italians, all the people of Italy - male and female - 42,800,000 Google hits

italiane - Italian ladies - yes they do deserve their own word even though they are already included above - and have the fire power to prove it - 24,400,000 Google hits (although it would be wishful thinking to conclude they outnumber men as signifficantly as these figures imply - for many reasons, including Italian grammar).

As to development ideas, most are pretty obvious but I would be happy to discuss if anyone is interested.

Look me up on italiani punto mobi (no, not just yet). :)
