Is putting keywords in your domain a must?

I know that to succeed in making money online you have to do a lot of keyword research. But is it very necessary to stuff your main keyword in your domain name. Sometimes keyword stuffed domain names are real ugly. But to search engine optimize (SEO) your site you must have good keywords. But can you get good SEO results even without putting keywords in your domain name? Please reply soon!!

Having keywords in your domain helps. but the amount it helps is not very much compared to what you can do to optimize your site. It is important to me, but that is because I park most of my domains. I really only have one page that I can optimize. So I go for keyword domains and some are very ugly, like best-free-search-engine-list.com (that one is not parked, but I also have bfsel.com). In this case, I put together what I thought would match several popular keyword phrases in one domain:

best free search engine
free search engine
search engine
search engine list
free search engine list

Using the hyphens make it less attractive, and harder to type in, but most people don't type in domains, they follow links. And with the hyphens the search engines can make a partial match to all the words. If the domain was bestfreesearchengine Google will only do an exact match, it won't try to figure out where other words start and stop.

So, do your keyword research and try to find a good domain that matches what people use to search with, but if you can't find a good one that way just try to find something else that people can remember.

HI

I have found... websites I have created with the keyword in the domain name have ranked very well and fast in the SE and in most cases I get the number one ranking for the keyword in the domain... so I make sure the website I make is related to the keyword in the domain name..

Example.. I have below... the following keyword domains.

Typing for Cash - Number one in Google
Link Directory - Number one in Google
Directory Submitter - Number one in Google

So it looks to me like it does help having the main website (focus) related keyword in your domains... I have also noticed if the domain is a .com it helps.

Thanks

Very cool.

But how much of that great ranking is the keywrods in the domain; and how much is the fact that the phrase is in the title tag (twice), the description tag, the keywords tag, and several times on the page...? :)

i think that it's a combination of all the things you've mentioned that help, and it also depends on which search engine you're referring to and their current algorithm. from what i can tell, yahoo places more weight on keywords in a domain than google.

Keywords in your domain doesn't hurt. But backlinks and SEO is more important. If you can have everything and accomplish what you want, that is best!

A lot depends on how competitive the niche is too. I think the keywords are especially helpful in small niches where there isn't much competition.

Yes, I completely agree. Look at Google and Yahoo... two very popular search engines. Their domains say nothing about "search engine" "search the web" etc. Its all about creating a site that is unique, good SEO, and you are golden. Keywords in domains dont hurt, but IMO id rather have something short and easy to remember instead of something like buy-used-car-stereos-online.com

If I am selling into this niche I would not expect anyone to ever remember my short easy name. I think the only traffic would be from someone searching on those terms, in which case the long, difficult name does no harm because they will be clicking the link from the search :)

Indeed. It does not have to say what your site is all about ~ The seo work, fresh content is what ranks you which is equivalent to traffic and conversion. What really matters after all.

Keyword in domain name is more important than you think, Maybe?

I have MindOrgasm.com
It's practically empty page.
I left it that way for long long time for testing purpose.
No update, nothing changed.

On google - #3 for keyword "mind orgasm" without quote
On google - #1 for keyword "mind orgasm" with quote
On Yahoo - #8 for keyword "mind orgasm" without quote
On Yahoo - #4 for keyword "mind orgasm" with quote

but then again i don't think many people are optimizing for that search phrase, nor is that phrase very common.

Results 1 - 10 of about 276,000 for mind orgasm.
Results 1 - 10 of about 6,570 for "mind orgasm".

the very reason and majority of the factors for the price of the domain is in the keywords, hence we need overture, keyword tracker/density, keyword price for each tld, etc.

How about Yahoo...
1 - 10 of about 12,900,000 for mind orgasm

But again, we are not talking about popularity of search phrase ;)

well those are exceptions and there's no rule
they can be anything hence it's a portal and they don't need to prove or optimize anything, they're just "it."
