Is it possible to get register.com domains through Snapnames before they expire?

i know this sounds rather strange, but is it?

- The domain was registered on January 13, 2005 and is not expiring until 2007.

- When I point my browser at the name I get a Register.com page with two blurbs..

1) Is this yourdomain name?

You can still renew your domain name even though your term has expired. Don't risk losing your domain name to a higher bidder.

2) Would you like this domain name?

Join the auction now to bid on this domain name. Click below to start the bidding process.

- whois.sc says "This domain is up for Auction (Starts at $60)"

- the link on Register.com points to snapnames.

Is there a way to get this before it expires in a little under a year?

Thanks!

Snapnames usually back-orders domains, so usually no.

But this may be a domain that someone registered but register.com got a credit card charge-back, then etc. etc..

It might be a good idea to note the end date / time for the auction.

No NP's needed :) I would say it is not possible unless you are the former owner of the domain - It does sound strange that the name is expiring in 2007 but it is showing the parking page.

To be sure - I would go to snapnames - type in the domain then check the whois shown in the snapname backorder pannel - if it show it is indeed registered until 2007 I would asume that "maybe" snapnames or Register.com has already reg'd it themselves in the hope to sell in auction.

Snapnames & Register.com are "partnered" - If it says the name is dropping in 2006 then you're best bet would be to go ahead and place the backorder with Snapnames.

Hope this helps :)

Yeah, make sure you check the whois. If register.com OWNs the domain then it's probably a charge-back issue. Normally if there's a charge-back, the registrar deletes the domain, but if the domain is really good, they may put it on auction.

Register.com regularly do business with snapnames, so this may be what's happening.

In this case, you can get the domain before it expires.

yes you should.
the domain was not renewed, but register.com renewed it (paid the Icann renewal).
they then auction it off at SN with the creation date staying intact.
more and more registrars are doing this. tdnam, bulkregister (about to), netsol, even enom and others are doing this because of a loophole in the Icann/Verysign agreement.

Yes - at least you have a chance to get it - even if you have to bid for it, I have got some nice names from snapnames where there was only me or ones where there was only 1 other bidder there - it does happen :)

Good luck - please let us know how you get on :)
