I am developing a recipes site. And some great keywords are available in the .tv. I.e. weightlossrecipes.tv. Are .tv websites ranked any less than .com? Or should I find a .com but it won't be as keyword ritch. The site will have videos so to me it makes sense. What are people's thoughts?

I think Google recently relaxed their search results for extensions like .tv, .ws, and a few others, and now treats them the same as .com domains for Google Search Results. You should be ok, but I'd still prefer a .com

with multiple recent Google updates long tail exact match domains lost a great part of their advantage in getting high search position. and that trend seems to only escalate and strengthen into the nearest future.
in addition, Google clearly stated their intentions and is moving forward to put even more stress on unique quality content rather than judging sites by their seo optimization efforts and quality

effectively the need to develop ugly keyword names is not here anymore. you should now concentrate more on domain quality in terms of memorability, branding, usability - short, pronounceable, radio testable, easy to spell etc

.TV for recipes site looks ok if you plan to have a lot and mainly video content. but weightlossrecipes.tv is too long and narrow, i'd take a look into 1 word or short 2 word quality .TV or go for .com instead

TheRecipes.TV
YourRecipes.TV
NoFat.TV
ZeroFat.TV
LowCalorie.TV
Fatless.TV
FatBurn.TV
etc etc are all avail and to me look much better than WeightLossRecipes.TV

imho

i have a few .tv sites set to 'no specific location' via webmaster tools ........so not just tuvalu

if the site is video based i would definately consider a .tv

Bing & Yahoo still place heavy emphasis on keywords and it is far easier to acquire a decent keyword in .TV than .COM which has more than 110 million registrations. I would agree you should target a shorter name but probably one which is a little broader than merely weight loss recipes - perhaps a weight loss site which includes diet tips, recipes for healthy eating and basic exercise guidelines.

I own a 3 Millions Searches 3 Letters Keyword Domain .tv and I really like it :)
I may build a website later or sell it for good money.

Use TV as a TV channel is a good idea.
If the dot com is available and your name is not too long I suggest buying both.

If the website has video content then go for .tv yes. Otherwise I'd recommend going for a .com domain name. :)

.TV is the top-level domain for the islands of Tuvalu, a small country located in the Pacific Ocean and it can barely be seen on most maps. the island is sinking and predicted to become one of earthโ€™s first nations to be washed away because of global warming. The future of .TV? I hope it's fine..

The extension is fine,............they will need money for boats, i would think there would be ongoing claims for minerals, mining, etc, in other words territory, even internet territory

That would probably lead to changing .TV status into fully featured gTLD for being one of rare meaningful extension that adds value to comparatively wide class of keywords.

There would be immediate influx of applicants led by Verisign to control the extension which is in more demand and more to the point than 99% of 2,000 new gTLDs

If there had been no Tuvalu, .TV would have undoubtedly made its way into the very first wave of approved new gTLDs to hit the market in 2014 with more pre-regs than the most of new gTLDs

Many sites use other extensions for delivering rich media content. If your .TV site is not going to be predominantly video based, it doesn't matter; if it is, then that's extra icing on the cake. Obviously there are some extensions to avoid and the issue with upcoming onslaught of new ones, but .TV will remain relevant.

That said, I will say I have a significant amount into this extension. Renewals are expensive in comparison to others. If you're serious about your site, then I'd take advantage of the initial opportunity to register multiple years at the low fee (see Name). Otherwise you're going to be paying $30 - $35yr after the first year.
