My question is...why can't domain names be a $1 per year for registration/renewal.

Recently, we have seen .cn drop their price down to something like $0.20 (even though its for a limited time)...this has really propelled the growth of .cn (see latest Verisign August report of Domain Names)....I think China is setting the right leadership on domain pricing and hope other countries follow...

Recently there has been some groups talking about developing products for the poor people of the world (which is over 90% of the people)...eg. $100 Computer....Lets face it, 130 million domain names have been sold, still probably less than 1% of the world population owns a domain name...

If .cn can be sold for $.20, .info is getting close $1....what is stopping .com, .net and other ccTLD's......Its Monopoly that is stopping the price drops.....

Why can't the .com registry be OUTSOURCED for lower cost ? Its being done in other industries, what is stopping the Internet Biz...

Please comment away...

Well actually I don't think it would be good.
8$ isn't much (ok, not counting the very poorest people).
Imagine if everyone could afford lots of domains. internet would become a much more garbage than it is already! Millions of worthless spam domains...
I strongly believe that "premium" TLDs should cost at least 5$ so getting a domain means some investment, to prove that domains owner is serious about his purchase.

i'd rather buy ten domains at $10 each than to buy a thousand domains at $0.1 but then lose them all because the registry sucks.

If you know you can sell apple for $5 each, why would you sell
apple for anything less?

You should be concerned how much MORE they are going to charge
next year, year after and after...

I am looking to see if any of the ccTLD's will follow China's lead on domain pricing....particularly India (.in)..

.com seems to be heading the other way, with Verisign slowly increasing the price...unbelievable

Verisign's cost are far lower than $1. The very fact that they aren't complaining all that much about tasting is evidence of this. The question is who does this actually impact? How many Americans can't afford to splurge ~$6-$8 on a name, or even the $10+ Verisign would like us to pay annually? Most of the people doing the complaining are domainers hoarding hundreds (or thousands) of names, at which point it's understandable that every dollar makes a difference. China still doesn't have near the per capita income we find in the U.S. , so it's understandable that they'd want to significantly lower the price of their extension so that it's adopted by their citizens, rather than have them be forced into purchasing a .info for cost-related issues.

this is market economy, if other extension lowered their fee, the competition would
force .com lower its fees. Is .com fee going to be higher in october this year?

.Com goes up about 7% on October 15, .Net rises 10% although it still will be sold to registrars for much less than .Com. It is unclear how each registrar will pass on the costs. .Com currently costs registrars $6.20.

I don't think anyone here is going to complain if .com fees are lowered to a $1...Its a no brainer

It does come down to Monopoly for registries...

If .com is split among a few registries, then competition will kick in...Can someone explain why Verisign gets a lock on this ?

ICA should be working such issues...
