Hey People,
I am sure that all of you have heard that Apple has dropped the price of the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399. This is an obvious move by Apple to crush the competing smartphones due to come out later this year. For those that may not know..the iPhone out sold all smartphones combined in units sold for the month of July.

All of this is good news for DotMobi because this places more focus on content for mobile devices. As more smartphones are sold that have similar feature-sets as those to the iPhone, the more demand for content for these devices. It does not matter that Steve Jobs and Apple does not support DotMobi....because in the end..they will be driving demand for more mobile content anyway. :)

I'd be pissed if I had just got suckered into the first round of the iphone and a month later they drop the price $200...holy xxxx...this is bad PR imo

Dentalpro, why would you be pissed? A price drop was predictable. Would you have bought a VCR when they were $3,000? You get what you pay for at the time, and then prices drop as they sell more units. Simple economics, nothing new.

This is great news. More people who have iPhones means more people on the mobile web, which means more traffic for .mobi domains.

We all should be celebrating.

I was thinking the same thing... Steve Jobs is evil.

Maybe, but he knows how to sell units. I predict a large number of people getting iPhones after this drop, and I'm happy as a clam.

very interesting... i think with all the new smartphones coming out (nokia, htc, etc)... apple will NOT be the front runner. Xmas i think is when the next round of . mobi positive hype will come.. lets archive this thread :)

Standard Operating Procedure at Apple. Better products and price drops are common and they are entering a highly competitive market. Considering the bad press regarding their initial problems and the gPhone, and other high end releases form Nokia and others, this price drop seemed pretty timely and made their product somewhat price competitive in a crowded field.

I hope they do go down to $199, that means more people using the mobile internet and looking at our domains.

I don't know who in their right mind would have bought an iPhone right out of the gate anyway. Not just because of price, but also because there were better products out there at the time of the launch for the same or less money.

I don't think someone needed to be out of their mind to buy one, they simply wanted a better phone and chose the latest thing. It's better than most devices out there and few match it's design. Sure it has problems but it is ushering in a new era of consumer awareness of mobile web, at least in the US. I forewarned peeps here about buying anything first gen from Apple, do so expecting some bugs and soon to follow upgrades at lower prices. I've been using their products since '84, I know the culture all too well.

HTC and nokia have much better phones in R and D...

its good for the price ware on phones but imo

Good news, thanks for sharing.

And as for the whole "bad practice" thing...cell phones have a shorter shelf life than VCR's did, or video game consoles do. These products can't even compare with a cell phone in today's quickly-evolving mobile market. I think that a price drop like this should have been expected. Just think if Apple had kept the price at $599 for 1-2 years. Or even 6 months. Wouldn't have been a good move..

C'mon guys, it's called business. ;)

Is that why Jobs apologized?

FYI...apparently Apple is now offering $100 credit towards Apple products for those who purchased the iPhone at the initial $599 price.
