I'm sure you've all heard your own horror story of 1&1. They did something that surprised me today, here's some background information.
Before I got started in domaining, a friend of mine purchased a domain at 1&1. He renewed it once, then his credit card expired and I rarely talked with him. He did, however, give me the contact information to the 1&1 account a few months ago. The account was locked -- I couldn't get into the admin section of the domain to change nameservers or anything -- only change contact/credit card details. The billing department had locked it, as I later found out by the support staff. After that, I had a failed attempt of transfering the name to Namecheap.
A few days ago, I put updated, current credit card information into the area of the control panel that I could actually access. I contacted 1&1 via email and they said the account was marked for deletion and that the domain was expired. By this point I was rather frustrated -- I happened to like this domain a lot; i was my favorite domain which was my personal email account and website for a while. But, later on, after a continued conversation with 1&1, the support rep said the domain was unlocked and that they recommended transfering the domain. WHAT? Your reaction was probably the same as mine. If the stories (and my experiences) were true, it was nearly impossible to transfer out of 1&1 -- and now they're recommending that I transfer the domain!
I was very surprised by that and promptly started a transfer request at NameCheap. Hopefully things will go smoothly this time -- hopefully I can keep my domain and manage it in my NameCheap portfolio -- then I could live happily ever after... kind of. :hehe:
